5 Ways to Flavour Sugar

I'm a self confessed sweet-toothed sugar addict. You got a dessert you don't want anymore? I'll take it off your hands for you, free of charge. Now, I'd never say something so blasphemous as 'sugar can get boring' but I will say that once in a while, you need a flavour kick to jazz it up a bit.

This is where flavouring sugar comes in. Flavouring sugar is similar to infusing an alcohol. It mostly requires time and patience and letting the flavour really steep into the sugar. Flavouring requires simply letting something sit in sugar or a bit of mashing first and mixing before letting it sit. For the most part, you can leave the ingredients in the sugar, but with larger pieces, you can scoop them out.

What's awesome about flavoured sugars is that it adds a little somethin' somethin' to any recipe and you can totally let your imagination run wild with combinations.

Here are a few of my favourite flavoured sugars:

Cinnamon: Break a stick or two and place in sugar bag.

Dried Culinary Lavender: Break off the blooms and mix into sugar.

Vanilla: Split pods open and scrape out seeds, mix into sugar. Let the pod cases sit in sugar.

Orange: Grate the orange peel into sugar.

Cardamom: Excellent in cookies or coffee - split open the pods by pressing them with the flat of a knife and remove the seeds. Pulverize the seeds with one cup of white sugar.

Kinda cool, right? Think of it as a dessert upgrade! Have you or would you try this?

I think coconut would be great! Also, cocoa/chocolate or any dried fruit.

@xhiao1994 YES actually! I was going to mention this as an add on but you can flavour your sugar and then use that sugar for cotton candy. You can also flavour your sugar with an extract, let it evaporate and dry out and use that sugar too.

@mirandasivilay I would leave it in for a good week or two to make sure the flavour is there, the longer the better though

How do you know when the sugar is completely 'infused' and ready to use?
