“And the Oscar goes to…”

Four words that leave the cinematically obsessed lurched forward in their seats, elbows perched on their knees as their fingers rest delicately on their lower lip in anticipation. As a Film Graduate and Oscar night devotee, I tend to keep my predictions as objective as possible - and it has proven successful in the past. So for those placing bets, take notes: this isn’t considering cheating.

We start with the most obvious category: Achievement in Visual Effects. Without even knowing the nominees, most people that have access to any type of media will tell you that Avatar is going to snag this Oscar. James Cameron would have a conniption fit otherwise.

Original Song, a trickier category, can be one of the many tiebreakers in some Oscar pools. My choice: “The Weary Kind” from Crazy Heart. Its honesty and fragile description of the adversity of love during personal struggle is poignantly beautiful – a rare quality that deserves the win.

I’m not particularly thrilled with this year's field for Best Actress in a Leading/Supporting Role, and the only two actresses that I hope to win will most likely lose. My personal choices: Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side and Maggie Gyllenhaal in Crazy Heart. Who do I expect to win? Gabourey Sidibe and Mo’Nique of Precious.

Unlike last year, where the nominees for Best Actor in a Leading/Supporting Role all had brilliant performances, this years winners seem fairly obvious. Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart will take home the Oscar for his portrayal of a heart-broken Country singer struggling with alcoholism. Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds deserves the win alone with his ability to seamlessly transition from speaking perfect German to English and Italian.

With ten nominees for Best Motion Picture, it is difficult to narrow it down to just one prediction. I would honestly hate to see Avatar win because stripped of all the special effects it was just a glorified love story we’ve heard before. My gut tells me that Avatar will be echoing in our ears come Oscar night, but in my opinion, The Hurt Locker deserves the win for its unique portrayal of war during terrorism and its captivating cinematography.

As for the threads, keep your eye out for Penelope Cruz and Kate Hudson – both never disappoint and are always so elegantly sexy in whatever they wear. Meryl Streep, while always sophisticated, tends to disappoint with a frumpier and less flattering gown – every year I hope to see her in something more stunning.

Have you made your bets yet?

I love that comment about Christoph! I want Sandra Bullock to win, just because I've loved her since forever. (haven't actually seen that movie yet though - erk!)

Christoph Waltz deserves to win. I wanted to leap through the screen and throttle him. The way he ate that strudel still gives me nightmares...

And I still love Avatar. It was just so much fun!
