Amy Poehler's Funny And True Advice to Harvard Grads

Posted by Siofan | Friday May 27, 20117 comments

Sweet and goofy, charming and smart, Amy Poehler has pulled out the laughs on the small screen (Saturday Night Live, Parks and Recreation) and the big screen (Baby Mama, Mean Girls). Harvard University asked the commedienne to speak to their graduating students at their Class Day ceremony on Wednesday. Poehler skipped the silly antics and delivered a heartfelt, funny speech about life and its challenges. Advice included: "You never know what is around the corner, unless you peek. Hold someone's hand while you do it, you'll feel less scared. You can't do this alone, besides it's much more fun to succeed and fail with other people, you can blame them when things go wrong." Sentimental truths toughened up with a bit of snark, we love it!

Some of her best words came towards the end of the 15 minute speech: "Try to keep your mind open to possibilities, and your mouth closed on matters you don't know about. Limit your 'always' and your 'nevers.' Continue to share your heart with people, even if it's been broken. Don't treat your heart like an action figure wrapped in plastic and never used. And don't try to give me that nerd argument that your heart is a Batman with a limited edition silver Batarang, and therefore if it stays in its original packaging it increases in value."

If there's a student graduating in your life, this is a great video to show them. While for those of us who aren't facing a milestone, there are still some great life truths. What do you think?

Love the speech! It balances humour with great advise. "try to keep your mind open to possibilities and your mouth closed on matters you don't know about", "Other people and other people's ideas are often better than your own", "No one is here today because they did it on their own", etc. Very true.

Now that I think about it, this reminds me of Ellen Degeneres' Graduation speech at Tulane University!

I must also add that another really good graduation speech is J.K. Rowling's. Look it up on youtube if anyone is interested!

I really like Amy Poehler. She is funny and successful. The speech was funny yet it was inspiring. I wish I can have someone like that speak at my university.

Amy Poehler's such a great person! She's always been hilarious, but you could tell she's got the smarts to stay in the entertainment industry with a clear head! (unlike SOME other celebrities that I will not name).
