Authentic British Eats for Victoria Day | ||
Ah, the long-awaited Victoria Day long weekend. While Canadians might immediately think of keggers and Bar-B-Que, perhaps this year you’re rather in the mood to try an authentically British celebration in honour of the holiday. Then you remember that Brits are famous for enjoying a quick pint at the local pub. But how do you choose among every Union-Jack-sporting watering hole claiming to be the real thing and identify one that’s genuinely old-school? As a British ex-pat, I have a few insider’s tips: Character It’s hard to pinpoint, but a good pub has to have real personality. Old + eccentric = good; modern + shiny = bad. Think quirky carpets, vintage wallpaper, and ideally some artwork that your grandparents might appreciate. Decent Beer Of course! You’re there for that pint, after all. Look for a couple of regular bitters (= beers) on tap, and ideally some guest ales with original names like Ugly Sisters and Reverend Janet. Those old-school hand-pull taps are a must. Good Pub Grub Forget fancy gastro dishes (the “Is that it?” syndrome). Pub food should be hearty, simple and tasty. Look for pies, bangers and mash and treacle sponge and you won’t go far wrong. It may not do your hips any favours but it’s good for the soul. No Television Please, We’re British OK, we do have TVs in some of our pubs but not – if we’re honest – in the best. A night at the local is for catching up with mates, telling a few stories and enjoying that pint… and the best pubs let you do that. A Few Locals and a Friendly Landlord If the neighbours drink there, it’s a good sign. If they don’t, there’s probably a reason. The best landlords (ie. owners) are the ones who’ll greet you with a smile and might even – if you’re lucky – remember your favourite drink.
