Beauty Secrets from your Medicine Cabinet

Did you know that your medicine cabinet is chock-full of amazing skincare and beauty goodies? It's like a secret beauty treasure chest waiting to be discovered! Here are 11 products that you likely already have (or you can easily pick up at the drugstore for a low price) that do double duty when it comes to your beauty and health.

1. Cicaplast: I know that I've talked about this product before, but seriously, I keep finding new uses for it! I started using it on broken skin to help healing, but my latest use for this is on blisters. For any cuts, scrapes etc. you may have, try this one to speed up the process.

2. Aspirin: Chances are, you probably have Aspirin in your medicine cabinet, which is perfect for when a pimple pops up and you're in a pinch! Crush the Aspirin with some honey, water, lemon juice or witch hazel (or a combination of them) into a paste and spot treat to quickly dry and zap that zit. Note: use only uncoated Aspirin for this.

3. Vaseline: Oh, the many uses for vaseline! For intense dry patches from acne products, I will dab a bit on. It's super moisturising and emollient. I also use it to take off makeup and for super soft lashes and brows. Here's a link to an article with even more uses that you may not have even thought of.

4. Bio-Oil: Bio-Oil is traditionally used for stretch marks, but we've found a ton of other uses for this nifty product. One that I've most recently discovered is a primer! First cleanse and moisturize as you normally would, then blot with tissue. Pour some Bio-Oil onto your open palms and rub, then apply to your face. Blot again with a a tissue to get rid of excess oil. Make-up as you normally would!

5. Polysporin: Similar to Cicaplast, Polysporin speeds up healing. What I love about Polysporin is that it's antibacterial and prevents scarring, meaning it makes a great acne fighter.

6. Diaper Cream: I mentioned not too long ago that diaper cream which has zinc in it, is actually a great skincare product for acne. I've been testing it out recently and here's the verdict: it's pretty darn effective. What I like about it is that it doesn't dry out my skin too much, which means I don't have to worry about flaking. I found it stung a bit at first, so I only use it every so often. In addition to helping with acne, I use it to help with ingrown hairs and any sort of skin irritation that I might have.

7. Pepto Bismol: We experimented with Pepto Bismol as blush, but since it contains salicylic acid which helps fight blemishes, I've actually found it to be most useful as a mask or spot treatment. I like to apply it with a cotton pad or cotton swab. It's also extremely handy to have around when I gorge on tacos while I forget that I am allergic to avocado.

8. Calamine: Calamine soothes bug bites and chicken pox, but it's also useful for irritated skin that needs to be calmed down. Calamine can be used to control oil (like MoM) or as a spot treatment to dry and shrink blemishes.

9. Milk of Magnesia: Normally, milk of magnesia is used to cure stomach issues but it's also an excellent primer or mask. I first used milk of magnesia as a primer about a year ago and since then, I have successfully used up an entire bottle. Milk of magnesia works wonderfully to absorb oil throughout the day, reducing shininess along the way. MoM is especially handy in the summer months when sweat, oil and all that other stuff combine for an acne cocktail.

10. Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel: While this will work great to prevent chafing during those summer months (runners, take note!), it also works as a primer so your makeup stays intact longer.

11. Sea Salt: For the regular readers, you'll probably know how obsessed I've been lately with baths. I credit sea salt and epsom salt baths with keeping my skin soft and helping prevent nasty ingrown hairs. I find I get lots of bumps on my arms and legs and a homemade salt scrub works wonders for exfoliating.

This is great. I've heard of many of these and probably only tried a couple of them. I DID find out a great way to remove make up. My aunt had given me a bottle of bath oil from Avon, Skin-So-Soft. Now normally you'd use it in a bath to soften your skin, well, this one does double duty too. I use it on cotton swabs to remove the mascara from my eye lids as I don't always have the steadiest hand, and by using this, it comes off very very easily, it also leaves your skin smooth too, and doesn't irritate the skin. But I usually end up going over the areas where I took the make up off with a dry cotton swab as I kind of don't like that oily feeling. I'm sure you could even use any baby oil or the like to remove make up as well. Once again, great tips in this article; thanks for sharing them.
