DIY Holiday Gift Idea: Homemade Lip Scrub Tutorial

Wednesday December 14, 2011 by ChickAdvisor Team

Winter brings with it some of my favourite and wonderful things: the holidays, eggnog, limited edition beauty sets and special drinks at my local coffee shop. However, it also brings with it the bane of my existence: chapped lips. Yuck.

Here's where we introduce you to a fabulous remedy, a lip scrub! Used on its own and applied with a finger it refreshes and rids your lips of those unsightly flakes. For extra care, try applying with a toothbrush and afterwards, using some lip balm to soothe that gorgeous pucker of yours. While you can purchase a lip scrub, it's actually very easy to make your own and this makes a great gift for the holidays.

It's inexpensive, has only a few simple ingredients and you can customize it to suit your or a (very lucky!) BFF's!

What you'll need:

2 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp castor oil
1/2 tsp cocoa
1/2 tsp coffee grounds
apx. 3 drops of peppermint oil extract

Step 1: Gimme some sugar!

For lip scrubs, granulated or castor sugar works best. If you want to try making a body scrub, you can use a heavier and thicker sugar like a brown sugar.

Step 2: Slick like oil!

This oil acts as the base for the scrub, it adds to the sugar to create that scrub texture you are used to. If you don't have castor oil on hand (which is regularly used in lip balms and glosses), olive oil or jojoba oil will work too.

Step 3: Mmmmm... minty!

This oil adds fragrance and some conditioning to your lip scrub. If peppermint isn't your thing then try lavender or almond oil.

Step 4: Mix it up!

Mix all the ingredients together. Hopefully this is the consistency you get!

Step 5: Chocaholic, much?!

We mixed the coffee grounds and cocoa in a separate cup beforehand then added this blend to the scrub. The cocoa and coffee gives a nice scent, colour and a bit of flavour to your scrub!

Step 6: Presentation is everything!

We found some small plastic containers at the dollar store for this step. If you have old glass jars, this would look super cute too!

The Final Look

We're absolutely in love with our adorable little trio of lip scrubs! We decided to create some custom labels as well for the set using card stock and markers. Because we're just 'oh-so-adorable' like that, we also decided to add an ingredients list for our lip scrubs too. Of course, we made sure to list the most important ingredient for a DIY gift: love.
