Golden Globes 2013 Beauty: 3 Looks We Love

Posted by Alexandra C. | Wednesday January 16, 201310 comments

Truth be told, I hate award shows. They're usually a giant snore fest for me. However, I decided to sit down and watch the Golden Globes the other night and I was actually kind of glad I did because: A. I got to watch Jodie Foster's speech, B. Amy and Tina were on fire and C. The red carpet never fails to bring out my fun, catty side.

On the dress front, I had a lot to critique. Just check out our list of the best and worst dressed of that night (Bonus: you can comment to win a prize!). However, when it came to beauty, though there wasn't a ton of variation, I was pleasantly surprised that I had little to critique. Most celebrities did one of three looks and overall, they kept it pretty simple. Nothing too crazy, not a ton of colour, but the simple elegance was a nice break from the oxblood and jewel tones we've pretty much overdosed on this past fall and winter.

Here are three looks from the Golden Globes red carpet that I'm in love with:

Look #1: Minimalist

In our round up of beauty trends for 2013, we talked about minimalist looks making a comeback and the celebrities proved us right on the red carpet. While award shows usually give us variations on the dramatic eye + bold lip combo, this year went in a completely different direction. Colourful shadows were replaced by neutrals and liner and lashes. Bold lips were softer, mostly in shades of pink. Even though this might seem a bit boring, I think the look is a nice breathe of fresh air after the heavy, dark shades we saw in fall/winter

Get your skin matte and velvety with a light flush and subtle glow. A groomed brow frames your eyes. If using shadows, stick to flesh toned shades like a champagne or taupe. Line your upper lid with black and top off with mascara for eye opening lashes. Do a 'your lips but better' colour in rose or berry.

1. Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette (C$32.00)

2. Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Eye Pencil (C$30.00)

3. Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipstick (US$8.49)

4. L'Oreal Telescopic Shocking Extensions Mascara (C$12.99)

5. L'Oreal Infallible The Super Slim 12H Eyeliner (C$10.99)

6. Duo Professional Eyelashes D14 (C$12.99)

7. Josie Maran Magic Marker Lip & Cheek Stain (C$25.00)

Look #2: Smoky Eye + Nude Lip

Some celebrities opted for smoky eye with black, browns and a touch of shimmer. This look focuses solely on the eyes, bringing them out to the forefront with exaggerated shadow. It works, without being too over the top, because the lip is kept in a nude, peach or light pink colour.

For a quick refresher on how to achieve a smoky eye, check out this tutorial. Be sure to highlight the inner tear duct and underneath the brow bone to create the illusion of a larger eye. Coat top and bottom lashes with mascara then finish with nude shade. I think a gloss on a nude shade gives the look a bit of glamour too.

1. Stila Smudge Pot (C$26.00)

2. Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint in Joy (C$31.00)

3. L'Oreal Voluminous Power 24H Black Smoke Mascara (C$11.99)

4. Dolce & Gabana Passion Duo Gloss Fusion Lipstick in Imperial (C$34.00)

5. L'Oreal Color Riche Caresse Shine Stain Lipcolor (C$12.99)

6. CoverGirl Liquiline Blast Eyeliner (C$9.99)

7. Bite Lip Shine in Prosecco (C$23.00)

8. Tarte Call of the Wild Amazonian Clay 8-Shadow Collector's Palette (C$47.00)

Look #3: Pop of Colour

Instead of playing up their eyes, these ladies chose to draw attention to their lips with a collection of punchy, poppy colours. Berry and mauve tones seemed to dominate but Sofia Vergara did a brick red as a twist on a classic and Jessica Alba's tangerine, coral pout emphasized her peachy blush and bronzed skin.

This is a great tutorial for creating the perfect red lip and can be replicated with any colour alternative. Coles notes version: for extra pigmentation and endurance, first prep your lips with concealer or primer. You'll want to choose a similar colour in a lip liner and then apply your lipstick.

1. Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Color (C$28.00)

2. Kat Von D Painted Love Lipstick (C$23.00)

3. CoverGirl Blast Flipstick Lipcolor (C$10.99)

4. Sephora Collection Rouge Shine Lipstick (C$15.00)

5. Lancome Rouge in Love Lipstick (C$30.00)

6. Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick (C$35.00)

7. Nars Lipstick ($30.00)

Jessica Alba never fails. She should NEVER fire her wardrobe/hair/makeup stylists.

I attempted a sort-of nude lip with some lipstick that was almost white.. complete disaster. I'll leave it to the celebs.

I like the smoky eye, but I don't care for the nude lips. I'd rather have the pop of color with the smoky eye's.

I've really noticed the 'pop of colour' look is popular right now, everyone seems to be rockin it! I like it though, because there's so many variations and I feel everyone can pull it off.

I'm not a huge fan of nude lips usually. I think JLO, Claire Danes and Allison Williams did a great job on it though. I think they chose right with a pinkish hue.

@KatelynRose1984 I agree. If the nude colour is too close to your skin tone, you look like you don't have a mouth.

I love the ladies who added a pop of colour to their lips. Looks great!
I do love the smokey eye as well, but I'm not really a huge fan on the nude lips.
