Hibernation Series: ChickAdvisor Movie Night Staff Picks

I've officially sealed off my doors to the outside world and sequestered myself inside for the season. I only go outside when necessary (in order to keep my job, buy a new foundation and make sure my fridge and liquor cabinet are stocked). Because I'm a total homebody, I've been watching a whole lot of Netflix and you know what? No regrets.

The only downside is that I'm running out of things to watch. So, I asked CA staffers to help me out and give me a few suggestions and I added a few of my own as well. So, let's chat. Leave me a movie or TV suggestion in the comments, tell me what's on your Netflix at the moment!

Renee

Celeste & Jesse Forever: This film is part drama, part comedy, and it refreshingly avoids romantic cliché. I love this film for its painful realism, which is both insightful and bittersweet.

500 Days of Summer: The narrator at the beginning of the film sums it up pretty well, "this is a story of boy meets girl, but you should know upfront, this is not a love story."
Tom and Summer are not the most emotionally stable people on the planet, but they're both charming, abiet in a frustrating kind of way. I love this film for its quirky nostalgic feel, which lets get real, Zooey Deschanel is made for.

Rachel

The Holiday: I'm always a sucker for The Holiday. Cameron Diaz' hesitance towards love mixed with Jude Law's heart-quenching charm is suitable no matter what time of year it may be.

Yes Man: Perhaps I'm bias because Jim Carrey, was born from my hometown of Newmarket, Ontario, but I am a massive fan of Yes Man. I enjoy movies I can walk away from with an enlightened state of mind or a new perspective. That said, since seeing the movie I've become much more of a "Yes WOman," which can lead you in many interesting directions if you commit to it. [Insert cliffhanger here]

Alexandra

Love Actually: I've never been a huge fan of rom coms but I've got a soft spot for this one. The cast is incredible and it manages to be sweet, endearing and funny without being cheesy. Everytime I watch it, I find a new favourite couple to root for.

The Killing: And on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, I am currently crushing the series, The Killing on Netflix right now. And. I. Can't. Stop. It's chilling and you never guess what's going to happen next. The characters are relatable and likable but not typical 'detective' characters which makes this show stand out amongst the CSIs and Law & Orders.

Miranda

Mrs. Doubtfire: I’m a 90’s child so Mrs. Doubtfire holds a special place in my heart. In the midst of a divorce, Robin William is ridiculous as he disguises as a nanny to be with his kids. He embodies the character extremely well (quite scary) with many hilarious slip-up and stunts. There is never a dull moment. Not to mention, the cute girl from “Matilda” and Pierce Brosnan stars in it. This super light-hearted movie is perfect for bringing the family together during the holiday.

Inside Man:For the not-so-sappy movie goers, check out Inside Man. This action-thriller is directed by Spike Lee. Clive Owen plots the perfect bank robbery and toys with Denzel and the police squad in Manhattan NY. The storyline includes hostage and interrogation, solving puzzles, which keeps you on the edge of your seat. It’s extremely clever, suspenseful and entertaining!

I love Renee's picks and along that same line I would also recommend Ruby Sparks and Safety not guaranteed.

If you like Christmas films, and love thrillers, then take a look at homegrown film from the 70s called "Black Christmas". Its based on a true story from Montreal, and is filmed at Victoria College at the University of Toronto. It stars Margot Kidder from Superman.
I'm a huge fan of old horror films because they are psychological thrillers and not just plain gore or "don't turn around" moments.

Check it out...if you dare...

I've seen and love all of these movies. When winter comes around though I like to dive into all the Christmas movies I only watch once a year, like Home Alone, Elf, the Grinch, Rudolph, Frosty, Nightmare Before Christmas, and my all time favourite, Christmas Vacation. SQUIRREL! Some things never get old.

I've seen it all being up at all hours feeding my baby. Personal faves are Homeland, House of Cards, Raising Hope, Touch and Happy Endings. I'm also a sucker for certain standup comics like Russel Peters.

I watched a fair bit of breaking bad but it got too gross for me.
