How-To Hairstyles: The 'Cobra Stitch' Braided Crown

I guess I can blame it on the anticipated release of Snow White and the Huntsman, but lately I'm in kind of a fairy tale daze. More specifically, I've been obsessed with the romantic and organic look of fairy tale inspired beauty. With the modern remakes of fairy tales being released, I'm in love with the wearable interpretations of hair and makeup.
Today we're going for a feminine and elegant braided hairstyle that gives Katniss Everdeen a run for her money. Before you freak out, yes this braid does look complicated but it's really very simple. It's actually the knotting technique that we used in our DIY friendship bracelet tutorial. Only done in hair, it becomes a style fit for any princess!
I'm going to be creating two of these braided sections on either side of Miranda's head and bringing them together in the back like a crown, however I definitely encourage you to play around with this. Once you get the hang of the knotting method try braiding a larger section or multiple ones.

Step 1a: First, on one side of Miranda's head, I sectioned off a piece of hair. Next, I ran my fingers through her hair with Herbal Essences Touchably Smooth Anti-Frizz Creme (C$4.99). This helped to tame flyaways, making her hair smoother and easier to work with.
Step 1b: Then, I separated this section into three smaller sections.
Step 2: Take the piece of hair on the right side (you can also start with left). Place it over top of the middle piece, creating a '4' shape.
Step 3: With the left side (piece that you didn't use), place it over the end of the right side. Bring the left piece underneath the middle one and then push it through the opening created by the '4' shape.
Step 4a: Push the piece through the opening created by the '4' shape and pull it through. To make the knot smaller and tighter, pull each side.
Step 4b: Continue the knotting, switching the side that you start on.
Step 5 + 6: Keep repeating this process until you have a long enough braid and tie off with a small, clear elastic. Do the same braid on the other side of the head.

When finished both sides, bring them together in the back to create a crown.
What do you think of this hairstyle? Is this something you'd try out?

Very pretty, don't think I could do it on my own hair though as I am horrible at braiding my hair.

That is really unique love how it looks!
I agree, I probably couldn't do it on my own. But it looks very unique.
This one is harder to do on yourself, but it isn't impossible. The knots themselves aren't hard, it just takes a bit of dexterity and practice. Trust me when I say that if I can do it, you can do it. I'm the worst with braids normally!

I really like this and I wish I had someone here that could braid my hair for me. I can't do it myself because its so long and I can't hold my arms up and back like that for long enough. I think this looks so pretty and you can make a braid out of just about any kind of knot. I believe this is called a loose square knot.
That looks awesome!! |
