Makeup Guide: Applying Eyeshadow

Posted by Alexandra C. | Wednesday July 17, 201313 comments

When it comes to everyday makeup, I'm usually a bare lid and mascara type of gal. Yet every so often and especially for a special meeting, date or occasion I go with a fully done eye. Of course, there's an art to do a fabulous eye and I'm not always feeling creative enough to pull it off. That's why I find tutorials and guides so nifty! They break down the secret to the eye and tell you what shades to use where to give maximum impact.

We created our very own handy eyeshadow guide:

1. Brow Bone: This area should be highlighted with a light shade to create the illusion of a larger eye.

9. Crease: This is where your darkest shade will go, more concentrated on the outer portion. Dark colours stand out, which means the crease brings your lid to the forefront and your eye looks bigger.

2. Above Crease: Blend out your crease shade and bring it forward, just beyond where the crease stops.

3. Outer Lid: Where the darkest lid colour will go. You can blend or use a bit of the crease shade here as well for a more fluid look.

8. Middle Lid: Choose a colour in between 7 and 3. A good way to remember this is to go from lightest to darkest from the inner to outer corners of the eye.

7. Inner Corner: Choose a light colour to highlight and open up the area.

4. Outer Lower Lash Line: Go for a dark colour, usually the same one you used for 3. I prefer to use shadow, not liner in this area for a more subtle, natural look.

5. Inner Lower Lash Line: Opt for a highlighting colour. I will often use the same one as I did with 1 or 7.

6. Lash Lines: Use a liner and try to line as close to the lashes as possible. On the lower waterline, you can go for a dark shade or try a nude or white.

It's always interesting hearing people say they don't wear eyeshadow unless it's a big occasion but they'll wear eyeliner and/or mascara! I never wear anything other than eyeshadow unless I'm feeling like I need the extra boost.

I never ever applied anything myself -so I am so clueless on make up. Someone else has to do it for me. Lately, I thought, why not try? So, I went shopping.

My first try to do-it-myself, LOL. I smear all over, but i like the tutorial. it is very graphically illustrated, I am still having hard time following, mixing pallets, and I keep looking back at your guide.

Really fun, thanks Alex.

I used to do all of this, every day. It's hard to believe that I ever had that kind of time or commitment! :) These days it's usually just mascara unless I'm going out for the evening. But having a diagram like this really does make it a lot easier.

One neutral shadow from my lash line to my brow bone is my everyday look. To spice things up, I may choose a pearly white or champagne coloured shadow as my all-over lid shade. This helps me look awake and conceals any discoloration on my lid.

It's such a simple step that makes me look well rested and refined.

I never typically use eye shadow, but this is definitely a useful guide for those special occasions when I do wear eye shadow! Great tips.

This is a really handy guide! I wish I had something like it when I first started wearing makeup as it can be totally confusing not knowing what is supposed to go where.

The new MUFE mascara is amazing, but it does clump easily so more is definitely less with it.
