While the the weather is starting to cool down outside, the Spring/Summer 2010 runways were sizzling hot inside Bryant Park tents. The city was buzzing for New York Fashion Week, and we found the trends that will get you flocking to the racks next spring.

Pair a crisp, structured jacket with a flirty skirt next spring for a fresh, put-together look. Belt the waist of a masculine jacket to create a more feminine silhouette.

Long, loose flowing jackets are chic and cool. These silky cover-ups can take any outfit from the office to happy hour.

Mixing patterns is no longer a fashion faux pas! It’s one of the hottest trends on the S/S 2010 catwalks - just ask Marc Jacobs or Anna Sui. Anything goes - plaids, stripes, florals, and retro patterns.

We’ve started to see this trend in the stores for fall, and it will carry through the spring and summer months. Jackets, jumpers and suits are just a few of the pieces you should expect in plaid.

DKNY

Crop the leggings for the summer with some above-the-knee bike shorts. They are a perfect accessory to a shorter dress or under a long jacket.

New York City is already wearing the cutout trend. Max Azria’s Spring/Summer collection emphasized the deconstructed style, with slashes and cutouts used to “reveal the understated beauty of clean lines and sleek sophistication.”

Tibi

The harem/slouchy pants make their way into summer in bright colours and suit ensembles. Wear with a tucked silk blouse and a trendy jacket.

Ruffles and frills are pretty and romantic. Usually seen in lighter pastels, next summer expect to see these accents also in darker blues and black. My pick for this trend is Tibi’s fabulous ruffled black one-shouldered jumper.
