Tip Tuesday: 5 DIY Home Remedies

I'm kind of a clumsy person. Some would call it accident prone, I call it adorable awkward, but that's another discussion. The point is, with all the conundrums I get into, I need a list of go-to remedies for bruises, sore muscles or anything else that my unfortunate body gets put through.

Of course, store bought remedies are easy but I don't always have them on hand when I'm in a pinch. So, when my muscles are so sore I don't think I will actually be able to get off the couch to get to the store, DIY versions of store bought products are handy to have.

Here are five DIY home remedies that you can try out for yourself:

1. Olive oil + Horseradish: Mix 1 tbsp of horseradish with 1 cup of olive oil and let sit for 30 minutes. Apply with a massage to achy muscles.

2. Alka-Seltzer: Supposedly, this little product is not just for indigestion, it can also be used to help prevent UTI's. Dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and take at onset of symptoms to steer a UTI off.

3. Vinegar: Soak a cotton ball in vinegar and apply to a bruise for an hour, it helps speed up the healing process.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar: Rub this directly on a mean mosquito bite to relieve itchiness.

5. Mouthwash: As a powerful antiseptic, mouthwash can be used to treat broken blisters and even yucky fungus. Just be careful of the drying aspects since it is powerful.

Have you ever tried any of these? Do you have your own DIY remedies?

That’s a lot of home remedies that I could also try on my
bruises. Whenever I get a bruise, I just run to the freezer and get a pack of
frozen peas to help my sore muscles. It actually works well and although we don’t
eat frozen peas all the time, there is always a pack in the freezer ready to be
used in case we get bruised.

I love these ideas and would have never thought to try them out! I am a big fan of home remedies and will add these to my list of those to try out, especially the one for UTI's which I am prone to. Another one I have heard of is yogurt for yeast infections either rubbed around the outside to relieve symptoms and/or placed inside but I haven't tried that so I can't attest to whether it is accurate. I did find it on a site that I get my other home remedies from which have worked, so who knows!

I've never heard of the Apple Cider Vinegar one, that will be especially useful for me because I get eaten alive by mosquitoes in the summer.

Thanks for sharing these great tips! I had heard that Apple Cider Vinegar had lots of health benefits but I didn't know that it could be used to treat itchy mosquito bites, I will have to keep that in mind next summer!

Baking soda is a good one for whitening teeth and even skin discolourations. Using tomato juice, turmeric, and some sour cream will cure a pimple or dry itchy skin without the dryness. Clove oil cures both toothaches and earaches. Eucalyptus oil on the temples can help a headache. Clarified butter (ghee in my culture) and neem and curry leaves-infused coconut oil (also in my culture) helps with falling, thinning hair, and gets rid of premature greying. The grey hair really disappears and restores the melanin back in your hair, we tried this on my brother who gets stressed easily and develops grey hairs as a result. Coconut oil mixed with clove oil and neem oil also is great for aches and getting rid of black and blue bruises. One part can clear the infection, the other part acts as a powerful pain inhibitor.

I've tried a few home remedies over the years and some work great, but I just learned a big lesson
when it comes to using home remedies in your ears. After showering last wed my ears were blocked and
at first I thought it was just water because I could still hear, but it wouldn't go
away. So I thought they must be plugged
with wax. I tried a few home
remedies and each one I tried seemed to make me lose even
more of my hearing. Then I tried warm water and that made me go
completely deaf!! I've never bin so scared in my life as I
was when I was living in a completely silent world. It was late when I did this, so I had to wait to go to the Dr. He looked in both of my ears and he told me there was nothing in my ears at
all!!That really scared me and made me wonder what on earth I
had done to myself. It turned out my ears were blocked
because I had a cold I didn't know I had. I felt fine other then the blocked ears. He told me that instead of my nose getting blocked up with all that gross stuff
it backed up into my ear canals
making me go deaf. So home remedies can be a great thing
for some things, but when it comes to your hearing, or your
eye sight I think your best bet is to see
a Dr right away before you do more damage, or give your
self a heart attack like I did!! Its a week today and I and I'm happy to say I have just about all of my hearing back. Just be careful of what you use home remedies for and see your Dr if your not 100% sure about something!!

I've never heard of any of these but I'm excited to try out the vinegar for bruises. I'm always getting bruised from the sport I play, so this will come in handy.

Witch Hazel also works great on bruises. Apparently soaking your feet in cold water if they are sore is better than hot (it's supposed to be similar to an ice bath that athletes to reduce swelling). Toothpaste is also great on mosquito bites to help stop the itch.
