Adult Acne

on Feb 17, 2014 @ 03:27 pm

I've recently stopped taking the birth control pill and now I'm starting to notice that I am breaking out. My skin is extremely dry due to this cold winter weather yet I am constantly getting pimples all over my face.

I've tried regular bar soap each night and even proactiv but it just dries my skin out even more.
Any suggestions?

Vitamin E capsules. on Feb 18, 2014 @ 05:44 am

I'm going through the same thing right now. This time of year is horrible because skin is SO dry, and a lot of products dry it out even more. Personally, I found that buying Vitamin E capsules, breaking them open and rubbing them on my problem areas has helped quite a bit. Then in the Spring I'll go back to Proactiv.

I totally get you. I had acne as a teen, and now my skin is a lot better but I still do suffer from break outs especially when I ovulate or on my period. So basically for 2-3 weeks out of the month, I have crappy skin. Not fun.

First, your skin may be overdried, not oily. Overdrying can cause breakouts. Try a gentle, cream, hot cloth, or oil cleanser. Next, use a facial oil (I like sweet almond oil) and then a heavy moisturizer with hydralonic acid.

Try an exfoliating toner, or pads for daily use (like Noxema or Oxy pads) and for stubborn bumps use benzoyl peroxide or tea tree oil or something with salicylic acid.

Also have a few masks on hand. One with bentonite clay and one for moisturizing depending on how your skin feels.

Good luck!

Oh dear.. I find ProActiv to be the worst! It's like a harsh acid, I find. It works for some but not everyone.

I had the same problem when I went off my birth control.. I know it sounds like it'll clog you up more, but trust me, it won't... moisturize every day! Also exfoliate every few days... not every day, but maybe 2 times a week depending on how dry your skin actually is. This will get rid of the dead layer of skin on top, which is what's clogging your pores and making you break out.

As Alex mentioned, clay masks once a week work wonders... I also use a moisture mask whenever my skin feels exceptionally dry, because clay when used too often does dry your skin more.

Thanks ladies. I will definitely try an oil free daily moisturizer. I stopped washing my face but will keep exfoliating every few days.

Thanks a bunch!
