(I'm only 28 by the way!)
I desperately need advice!
I'm about to make an appointment for permanent color, but these things are in the back of my mind:
1. Every time I've used permanent color, it washed out in a week or two! Agggh! Why is that??
2. I hate my prematurely graying hair. Is it unrealistic to dream of always having a head of highlights and lowlights, on top of the base color, of course? Is it going to take too much effort to upkeep all that, having to color my roots every 6 weeks?
Thanks so much for any advice.

Snowdrop, that has been exactly my issue since I was 18 so I am a slave to the salon. I go every 4-5 weeks without fail or I would look at least 20 years older. While premature white hair looks great on at least 2 people in this world, I am not one of them.
What I do is find a salon where you have a good relationship with your colourist. If they understand you are a cash cow and will be coming in pretty much once a month they can often give you a more reasonable price than others who come in every 6 months.
I get my roots done with highlights every time. That makes it easier for the grays to blend in a little as they grow so it is less noticeable since my roots show within 2 weeks. Another trick is to get a root touch up kit from the drugstore to use between visits or those root cover up thingys that I keep hearing about but have yet to spot in the drugstores. They are like mascaras for your hair.
Until science helps us with this, that's about all we can do... sigh!
If you are in Toronto, Barb from Micheal Kluthe knows how to handle this kind of hair.

I have the same problem. I noticed the grays coming in around 21-22 and was forced to start dyeing regularly by 25 or so. I always go for high- and lowlights instead of a full job. I used to use the drugstore dyes to save money, but also felt they didn't last as long as the salon version. On the other hand, my hair grows out so quickly that I couldn't really say what was to blame.
Just talk to your stylist (and I'd avoid anything inside the Walmart Supercenter, just as a general rule ;)) about your concerns, and hopefully he/she will have some ideas on how to beat those grays.

I usually do the bottle at home every couple of months. I have 2 strands gray hairs (as far as i could tell anyways) but I always get so bored with my haircolour that I always change it completely or even redo it to a slightly different shade to vamp it up a bit.
MC the grey coverage mascara thingie you heard about, well I just saw it today at Pharma Plus! :) Sorry hun I saw this post just now so I didnt' grab the name but next time I'm there I'll take note of it and re-post the name.
meanwhile Nice&Easy has a good root touchup kit that i use...perhaps try that between colours?
