Formal updo for shorter hair

I have a formal event coming up and I'm going to do my own hair for the night.
I have curly hair that barely hits my shoulders, shorter pieces in the front, but no bangs. It's really grown out (cutting it is not an option right now) so the shape is not nice to just straighten it and leave it down.

My dress has a bit of a mock neck that ties in a pretty bow on the side, so I want to show that off.

My supplies are a flat iron, blow dryer, curling iron (although not one I particularly like), as many bobby pins and hairspray as my heart desires.

Ideas for me please?!

I don't have short hair..but that's just cuz i'm chicken. I think one person that pulls off really good updos is Lauren Conrad. I know she doesn't have short hair. But she always does that thing where she does a messy loose curly updo that looks like she's got short hair. Go google here and you'll find ideas. But my interpretation would be first wash your hair, while it's a bit damp work through some texturizing / volumenizing product. Also work in some heat protectant product. Than curl your hair all around (About 2-3 inches from top of the head). When you're done, just mess it up a little. Then i would pull the hair to the back from the side (When it's behind your ears but has has pieces falling out)....wrap it in a loose bun and just take bobby pins to secure the bun. Lastly, just tease the front so some falls on your face.... and spray hairspray to fix it...
Okay, i'm not the best at explaining..but just do some google-ing and you'll maybe kind of see what i mean... I hope this helps!!

Thanks a lot....the event already passed..I ended up improvising
something similar to your suggestion. Luckily there were enough bobby
pins on my head to keep it from falling apart before the end of the
