I have never religiously used a box dye. I have tried some of the semi-permanent ones but that doesn't really count in my opinion. I have thin and fine hair. I don't trust myself with a box dye. I fear I would some how bleach my hair till it fell off my head.
Do you ladies stick to the salon or diy?

DIY definitely. Salon's great but I prefer to have my wallet intact.

Is there a specific brand that you use?

Box dye for me. I found the John Frieda mousse was so much easier to use and didn't have that icky smell, but it didn't cover my greys, darn.
The more expensive box dyes tend to be less chemically and easier to use. I'm a real cheapo so I always look at the clearance section for red dyes, when they change the box design they get rid of all the old boxes.
If it helps, my hair has never done anything weird except changed color from a box dye!

Box dye for years. So far so good.

I always go to Sally's Beauty and buy developer and colour separately. I find there are way more options to choose from and you can customize the colours. Sometimes I will mix 2 colours to get a mid colour which I like! I also feel like I save money as I buy a big bottle of developer that lasts a long time and then just buy the colour boxes (often on sale) for around 5 bucks.

I have colored my hair DIY for about 25 years now. You can buy salon dye at Sally Beauty at the same price as box dye. Exact same dyes salons use. Great store, savings card club as well.

I have seen way too many people with green hair that is supposed to be a light colour that I don't even try to do it myself. I go see a professional. I'm very paranoid haha
|I do it on Mar 23, 2016 @ 01:32 pm|
When I just can't get to the salon, I do it from the box. And for the last 4 years I've done it from the box as salons in the city are just WAY too expensive. To get a cut/dye/highlights job, it would be at least $200!
I did find a stylist who has a salon in her basement, so I can get the works for $100! I'll go in the summer to treat myself :)
Inbetween her, however, I go with Vidal Sassoon or L'Oreal. I have never had any issues or weird colours happen.

I have done both. It really depends on what I want done. When I was dying my hair brown, red or darker shades of blond I used a box and did it my self. When I want highlights and a lighter shade of blond I go to the salon.
