I have really long hair. Well, it's super long if you count the extensions. I just found this post on Refinery29.com about caring for long hair.
1. First and Foremost—Get a trim, and don't wait more than 8 weeks between them. "Once you have a split end, don't allow it to travel up the shaft—cutting it off is the best thing you can do," says Titi Branches, co-founder of Miss Jessie's.
2. Keep Hair Moisturized—David Marinelli of De Berardinis Salon, recommends using a moisturizing mask every few weeks.
3. Stay Tangle and Breakage-Free—Pantene celebrity hair stylist Danilo (who has created runway styles for more than 10 years and works with Gwen Stefani and Katy Perry) says: "Don't use a brush on wet hair after its been washed and conditioned. Instead, use a comb with smooth, wide-set teeth to gently detangle hair, working from tip to root. And don't attempt to blow-dry soaking wet hair, either. To expedite your blow-out process and help prevent thermal damage, towel wrap your hair for 10-15 minutes to remove excess water before using a hair dryer."
4. Styling Steps—Always use a spray-on, leave-in conditioner for extra protection when using heat tools.
Do you have long hair? What do you do to take care of it?

I definitely agree with getting your long hair trimmed often, my ends split quickly and they just seem more obvious when your hair is long. I also agree that you need to keep it moisturized. After I started using damage control shampoos and conditioners (L'Oreal and then John Freida) I noticed a hug difference in the feel and look of my long mane.

I also have long hair. I dont trim it very often - maybe 4 times a year as it hasnt been growing as fast as usual. Im newly anemic :(
I rarely use a blowdryer - fries it! And only wash every 3d day - also dries out my hair if done too often.
I dont use a leave in condtioner as it drags down my hair and leaves it greasy - maybe if I washed it daily...but Im not willing to do that!
I do love the occasional deep conditioning mask - Pantene is good. If I use my flat iron I spray on some citre shine Thermo Defence Glaze first. One the days when my hair is frizzing and fuzzing out on me, a blob of got 2b smooth operator brushed through my hair helps tremendously.
I also sleep with my hair in a top bun most nights to prevent pulling and tangling.
