Unless you really know what you're doing, you'll end up looking like a poodle. I find that using a big barrel curling iron works best. Gives you nice natural curls and the heat helps get rid of frizz. I got one from conair for around $20 and use it all the time. Also a good styling aid helps like Bumble + Bumble styling lotion.

I have heavy, dark, straight hair like most Asians that doesn't hold a curl well. I find that curlers only work for you if you have shorter hair and just want to add volume (with large curlers). Depending on the length of your hair, medium-length to long then a curling iron works best to make curls. Remember to hold the hair around the barrel for at least 10 seconds and then hold the curl while it cools. As it is cooling, spritz it with a styling product like hairspray, it will set the curl. This makes nice, corkscrew curls :). If you want them more natural and wavy, just wrap the hair around the barrel for less time and let it fall down before it cools completely. Don't forget to use hairspray!
