I have melasma which is sometimes called pregnancy mask. It's getting worse fast - and I'm so self conscious about it! I'm not taking hormones and have never been pregnant, so I come by this 'gift' naturally. Has anyone ever tried any treatments for this? What were the results? All insights will be helpful - thanks!!

Doing a quick google search about melasma, I think the safest thing and the most effective thing would be to visit your doctor or dermo and ask them about options. However, besides this (and take note that I am not a dermatologist) I would look into chemical peels or brightening products. I do think that most brightening products available over the counter, may not be powerful enough though. A popular ingredient for brightening and a common one that you would find in most products over the counter, in 2% form is Hydroquinon. However, it works by skin pigment cells, and I'm not sure if this is always safe. Here's a good read on it: http://beautyeditor.ca/2010/10/27/why-hydroquinone-is-bad-for-you-albeit-effective-and-the-whiteningbrightening-line-i-recommend-instead/
I believe certain retinoids, forms of vitamin A would also work but I am not sure if these would be available in over the counter products. I think your best and most effective bet would be to visit your doc or derm and get a perscription.
