I'm about to try this for the first time.
I know that a kit from the dentist would be ideal, and I might try that
in the future, but for now I'd like to try a drugstore product.
I could only find a couple reviews, and they were not so enthusiastic. Can anyone recommend anything?

Those are pretty decent. I like them for between use with a
professional kit and do notice they whiten teeth from red wine and
coffee. I don't swallow the dissolved bit, I spit it out and brush it
Ultimately a kit from the dentist is going to be superior to anything
you get at the drug store (and totally worth the investment), but I
think the Listerine strips are pretty decent.

OK, I ended up trying the Aquafresh trays, with good results. I'll be writing a review in case anyone is interested.

and both of them were strips. The life brand one I didn't like at first, as it turns into mush after a few minutes (this is what they call dissolving). But it is still effective, and I just brush the mush away and my teeth feel quite clean and look whiter. I got crest white strips this time around (I figured it is more expensive, so figured better product?), but have to say I hate it. You have to leave it on for half an hour, and the instructions say to do twice a day - I am sure I am not the only woman out there who does not have an entire hour to devote to teeth. Unlike the commercials, there is no way you can go about your day with the strips on, as you can't talk, the strips slide around so there is constant re-arranging, and I find it burns slightly. In this case cheaper was better - I would rather put up with 5 minutes of mush than an hour of lost time.
I guess the trays would be my next try!
