I am thinking of buying a winter jacket for my hubby for X'mas and I was going to get a Columbia one. I want something nice but my biggest priority is I want something warm. We do the park & ride everyday to work, we go to work together but he comes home earlier than I do. He always leaves me the car at the bus station and he walks home, even when it's -20C. He's such a sweetie, so I think he deserves a nice treat for X'mas.
We both have Columbia jackets right now. I own a Titanium but it's just 1 jacket, no removable fleece. I want to get him one of those 3-in-1 jackets (with removable fleece) because it's what he has right now and he loves it. But his jacket is really old and needs to be replaced. I see there are different ones (ie. Titanium + other lines) and I don't really know what is the difference. The Titanium is more expensive but I don't really get all those "technologies" built into the jacket. I don't find my Titanium that much warmer than a regular winter jacket.
So does anyone have any good recommendation for me? Or maybe another brand of 3-in-1 jackets that's really nice and really warm?

I wish I had the answer for you. What a sweet post. What a sweet husband!
I have a columbia winter jacket I've been wearing for 3 years. It is amazing.
I would go to one of those travelling stores where they specialize in outdoor stuff. Usually they know their stuff. That's how I got my jacket. Hopefully someone here has some experience they can share with you.

I'm still wearing my 3-in-1 Columbia jacket from grade nine (I'm currently in my second year of university) and I love it! I've gone through many other jackets since, and this one remains my favourite. It's just a regular 3-in-1 with the outer rain coat part and the thicker fleece inside (no technologies..lol). I bought mine on Boxing Day, and it was marked down, so you could always wait until the day after Xmas if price is an issue (or get him a gift certificate and "recommend" a coat). I definitly recommend the 3-in-1 to everyone looking for a warm, sporty looking coat.
|go to REI (or some equivalent) on Nov 10, 2007 @ 11:30 pm|
Hi Bubbles! I have no experience w/ Columbia jackets, but I'm an ourdoorsy nut. I've had great luck in jackets in the following brands: Patagonia, Marmot, Mountain Hardware, REI, The North Face.
I tend to wear a wind/water proof and breathable shell over a cozy fleece jacket. For the uber cold days, when I lived back in the midwest, I wore a down puffy jacket. HEAVENLY!
I recommend you head to REI or EMS or whatever the equivalent is in your area. If you tell an employee what you're looking for I bet they can work together a system of warmth.

Ok - I just realized it is a North Face Jacket I have and not a Columbia. Please disregard my glowing endorsement for Columbia as I have probably never worn one.
This is what happens when I spend Sat night in front of the computer.
North Face is great though. Love it.

Wow...great advice, gals! Thanks!! I didn't know if I'd get any replies but I thought I'd give it a shot. I've shopped around for the Columbia ones and they were about $199 for a regular 3-in-1, and I think that was a sale price. But the Titanium line is about $100 more, which is why I asked if anyone noticed the difference. Thanks for the suggestions on other brands. I've heard North Face is good but I've never worn one myself, I'll be sure to check it out.
Spotty, thanks for the suggestions on the stores. I don't think we have those in ottawa but I know a few places that sell the same outdoorsy stuff. Haha...this post has given me a mission for the day. I think I'm going to hit a few stores and check out some more prices! :D

I've been wearing my 2-in-1 Columbia jacket for 4 years at least, and I still love it. I even got mine in an outlet store for a cheaper price (not sure if it was Sportschek or Coast Mountain Sports or not) I'm sure you can check out at Men's jackets on Columbia's website:
Hope that helps! :)
