color wheel

Recently, I was talking to a male friend and he divulged to me that he often uses a color wheel to put together his wardrobe. I don't know why, but it kind of took me by surprise, especially since I only see him in black and gray all the time! It got me to thinking that perhaps he had a good point with the color wheel. I'm interested, do you guys use it to put together outfits? OR does it come intuitively?

I would have never thought to use a colour wheel to create an outfit, but I could see how it would come in handy. Especially if you want to experiment with colour but you need a 'safety net'.

dumb question but... on Feb 08, 2011 @ 12:33 pm

What's the 'colour wheel' and how exactly would you use it to coordinate your outfits?

Here is an article from fashionbombdaily.com that describes the ways in which the color wheel is used to put together outfits.?

Image and Guide Source: http://fashionbombdaily.com/2010/04/16/the-color-wheel-how-to-combine-colors-wardrobe-accessories/

"You can make the following combos using the color wheel as your guide:

1.?Colors directly next to each other?(i.e. yellow and yellow-orange; yellow and yellow-green; violet and blue-violet, etc.)
2.?Colors that form right (90 degree) angles with each other?(i.e. yellow and red-orange; blue and violet-red; green and orange, etc.)
3.?Colors directly across from each other?(i.e. yellow and violet; blue and orange; red and green, etc.)
4.?Colors that form a T?(i.e. blue, orange, and violet-red; yellow, violet, and red-orange; yellow, blue-green, and red-orange, etc.)
5.?Colors that form an X?(i.e. blue, orange, violet-red, and yellow, violet, blue-green, and red-orange, etc.)"

I think I'm going to print this out and stick it to my closet wall. Sometimes I feel like I'm wearing the same type of outfit over and over. I can totally see this bringing about a change!

Thanks for sharing & the explanation!! :)

A good idea on Feb 09, 2011 @ 01:33 pm

I like that idea a lot! For anyone who is unsure about their sense of style it's actually a really smart thing to do.

But sometimes the most exciting outfits break the traditional colour rules.

Yea, I never thought about doing this either, before my male friend told me his little secret. I think it really is a great idea, and would totally recommend it to those unsure of color combinations, especially this time of year, as people want to experiment with color more
