So I have friends in the midst of cottage renovation. The question is this, is a cottage meant to have just the bare necessities in terms of decor and amenities or is a cottage supposed to have all the comforts of home so you can remained "plugged in" but just in a more peaceful setting? For cottage decor would you go more earthy and simple or make it like a second home but just on a lake and near nature. What do you think?

It depends on how you see a cottage (after all, it is a place to relax!)
A second home may be too much like the regular house (the daily grind!).
If simple makes you feel good, go simple. If the earthy/homey look works better to boost your relaxation mode, then go for that instead.

I think the consensus is that we are going to keep it 'cottagey' or keep it simple...mind you we do have a satellite dish! hahahaha but the TV is never on and half the time it is not plugged in!

Our family cottages were always a mish-mash of old furniture that people wanted to get rid of. Gives it a very cottagy feel. I would be shocked if anyone ever attempted decorating it :P

I just saw a House and Home thing on TV today about modern cottages vs. old cottagy feel cottages. In the end they said that a 'mishmash' or combination of the two is ideal! No 50" flat screens but a cordless phone is not a bad idea! Hahahah how ironic that I found the show just through channel skipping!
