So one of my new year's resolutions is to try to dress a bit better, especially for work (I'm a teacher). At least a couple of days a week. Generally I'm pretty casual. I'll just put on black dress pants, some top and flat shoes. I'll put on some foundation and then put my hair in a ponytail because I don't want to do my hair. I wake up around 6am and generally I prefer to sleep than to wake up earlier to put more effort into my appearance.
What are some tips or clothing pieces or outfits you'd recommend for me? One friend recommended a black pencil skirt, which I have. But I don't know what shoes to wear with it. I tend not to wear heels because I'm standing most of the day and they hurt my feet. And I'm not sure how professional tall boots would be.

Boots may be fine or even a fair of flats. You can find some cute and comfy flats I'm sure though you said you wear flat shoes often.
I like the pencil skirt idea, maybe a lot of basics that you can layer or what not like tank tops, blouses, cardigans. I think it's best to find stuff you can wear often with all different types of looks.

Love the idea of flats but you can also try out a kitty heel. After I hurt my back they have become my best friend!

You know what though? You don't even have to go the pencil skirt route. I feel like people have gotten caught up what used to be a "professional work" look, but it's changed so much and things are so exciting now! I'm just like you, I am almost shamefully casual (given I've changed quite a bit, but I still am essential a casual-classics type of girl at heart).
I recommend going for a dark wash skinny jean, a flowy blouse, and a great blazer. It seems really simple but the blazer instantly takes it up a notch. Then you can stylize with accessories like gold bangles, a simple long necklace, AND you can get away with tall riding boots and your everyday hand bag. Simple, but you still look put together, you know? Are we going places or are we going places? Haha.
Good luck, hun! Check out the link for some ideas
