Need help making wise fashion choices for a business trip!

on Feb 12, 2011 @ 03:18 pm

Soooo this is a spin-off from an awesome thread that Miss Lauren started called 'What will you buy next?'  In that thread, I mentioned that I was going to be buying some business wear for spring since I was headed to a business trip in the next 2 weeks (to Miami).

So the conference I am going to is a real opportunity for me...I wrote more about that on the other thread so I won't repeat it here.  However, the 'dress code' is business casual, which can be kind of tricky.  Since it's Miami, I thought I would try to do mostly dresses and/or skirts (although I will most likely have to wear stockings/tights due to pasty white skin).

My question to you can I pull this off? I want to look professional and fashion forward -however, I know that a power suit isn't appropriate for this situation. So far, I have a purple sheath dress, and a navy blue shirt dress-I am also contemplating a print skirt (that is comprised of teals and blues).  What else should I bring?

The only more 'formal' event that I will be attending is a night cruise (and yes I need help with that too).  I know I will most likely bring some kind of wrap to wear at night but what about during the day at the conference when I am networking and moving around?

*one more thing-I am no fashion model type. I am a curvy lady that wears between a size 8 and 10*

all help and suggestions much appreciated!  I need all the help I can get!

I'm so excited for your trip!
What I would do is pull out all of the stuff I already own that I want to bring/ I love to wear. They I would put together a few basic pieces (skirt/top/ pants) that already go together and make a list of 3-5 extra pieces you could use to make your outfits chic, and fashionable.

A new pair of shoes, a statement necklace, a menswear vest, a jacket, work jeans - a lace/sheer top would be some of the ideas off the top of my head.

P.s. I love print skirts - they are super fun, and they make a statement. My favourites are black and white floral

P.p.s.I'm going out to do a little shopping tonight, so I'll try and think of some other things you could buy.

perfect! on Feb 14, 2011 @ 09:50 pm

I love your suggestions-especially the lace top...I am hitting the streets tomorrow to look.

I have been watching the weather-it is h-o-t down there! So I figured short sleeve business wear during the day and fun stuff at night (if I have enough energy!).

Ok, here's what I'm feeling on Feb 15, 2011 @ 12:00 pm

If you like the lace trend - go for a lace detail on a shrug or a fitted blouse.
If you get a dress, you can be sleeve-less in the day and through a cute jacket with it for dinner.
If you want to pick up a shorter skirt for the warm weather you could pair it with some sexy lace stockings - they would add some drama and style and you'll feel like your legs are covered.
I say a lot of yellow - I love yellow, skirt, shirt, shoes, belt... what ever
If you like floral - I would try on some of the fitted dress I saw in a number of stores

Also, if you are looking for a trench coat (and you want to splurge $348 - please go to BCBG and buy the beautiful flare back and bottom trench I saw and was lusting after for an hour - I will live vicariously through who ever buys this)

not kidding.... on Feb 15, 2011 @ 02:22 pm

I just picked up some lace stockings from HUE (before I read this).....

not a fan of BCBG but I will check it out (I am trying out the 'open mind' thing in several areas of my life)

tall boots, scarves on Feb 15, 2011 @ 03:44 pm

I like a tall boot to go with skirts/dresses and denim alike. That also saves the pasty skin problem. Don't know how that fits in with your dress code at this conference.

Bring a fun patterned scarf to jazz up a simpler dress. I have a wide one that I can use as a light wrap and then later wind around my neck for more of a fashion statement. Mine is ivory-coloured though - maybe I should take my own advice...

I would also head into a trendy shop and ask the associate to dress you! If they know their stuff, you can tell them what you already have (maybe even bring it with you) and they should be able to suggest accessories or styling options you haven't thought of.

very awesome.... on Feb 15, 2011 @ 10:10 pm

I actually bought a fun scarf today-it will go with 2 of the dresses I have. I also purchased some lighter pink lace type stockings. I am also religiously applying self tanner :)

I am thinking I am going to bring one pair of denim trousers and the rest will be dresses. That way in case I have any wardrobe mishaps, I will still have some pants.

This whole thing has really made me think that I have to go back and really purge my closet. I really need to have a solid base of 'basic' pieces to fall back on....and right now, I don't.

I love basics! on Feb 16, 2011 @ 10:48 am

10- 15 basic peices will go so far. Then all you have to do is mix-match and pair with trendy accessories and shoes..... have you decided what shoes are coming with you?

mostly flats, 1 pair of sandals, 1 pair of heels, 1 pair of sneakers on Feb 16, 2011 @ 11:41 am

I am doing a brown flat (coach), a black flat (Anne Klein) with flower accent on toe, a silver and gold DKNY heel, a strappy sandal, and some sneakers for working out (yes I will be doing that while I am there).

Give me some time to find some links to my shoes-especially the heels!

ooo I'm excited! on Feb 16, 2011 @ 12:00 pm

Taking time to work out at the hotel is probably one of the best decisions! Do you know what the facilities are like there?
