I was at the mall yesterday (procrastinating, haha) and looking at all the stuff for spring. I really like a lot of it, but problem is that I'm rather poor at the moment, and while I would like to be able to update my wardrobe a bit, I don't have a lot to work with money wise right now.
So, if anyone has any tips on how to make the most of my limited budget, please do share! (And keep in mind that I'm a student and don't visit designer stores or anything like that).
Also, if you could have just one item this season, what would it be?

This is a tough one. I find everything is so expensive these days. $100 doesn't go as far as it used to, however it still has some clout at stores like H+M, Old Navy and some cool stores on Spadina + Queen.
The one must have item this spring I would say is the baby doll dress. If white looks good on you, go for a white one. The little white dress is this years LBD (little black dress) and you can wear it for everything. Old Navy has the most adorable baby doll dresses . In the stores they are under $40 Canadian but online they are on sale for $24 USD. That with a cute pair of wedges and you are set.
I also always check out sample sales and if you can bear it, Winners. Five on Spadina always has some great cheap finds. For that matter, there are tonnes of stores on Spadina that have really good deals.
In Shoes (241 Spadina) is the cheapest place I've ever seen to buy shoes. They always have a bankruptcy sale going (someone failed to tell them that means going out of business but who am I to judge?), so you can pretty much always get buy 1 get 1 half off or buy 2 get 3 and the average shoe price is $25. They have a nice selection and I've seen their brand, In + Out at other stores for $80 a pop (not worth it). If you want some cute flats or a cute pair of cheap shoes, this is the place to go.
Another tip, some new stores opened up on Queen West (just east of Spadina) where you can get cool tops and dresses for $10-$20. I can't remember the name of the store but it is on the North side, just west of Chocky's Clothing, which by the way has lots of cheap tshirts, tights and socks. I wish I could remember the name of that store.
If you have any krafty skills, go to Fancy Gems and Accessories (438 Queen St. W) where you can get wholesale prices on strings of freshwater pearls, glass, plastic + ceramic beads and every kind of semi-precious beads and stones like black onyx, fire jade, smoke quartz and a bunch more. Don't waste your money buying accessories somewhere else, make your own. They don't mind to explain to you how to do it. I'm going to go back forsure so I can make some necklaces. Everything is really nice quality but a lot cheaper than you would pay anywhere else.
If you want a good deal on hair salons, I've heard the Aveda Academy (King East) is a really good place to go. Apparently they do a great job and it's less expensive. Oooh and if you want to pamper yourself with a mani + pedi for a good price, a new nail salon just opened up at Queens Quay + Spadina (not really convenient I know), but you can get a manicure + pedicure for $35 - $40 total. They also use a fresh buff and file for you and put it away under your name so that when you come back they use it for you again (no charge) rather than using the same buff and file they used on the last 50 people before you - which is gross.
Whew! Got a little long-winded there. This is a really good question.

Wow, that was extremely helpful, thank you!
As soon as I'm done exams, I am going shopping! Can't wait!

The name of that store on Queen St. with the cheap tops is Spoof. It is on Queen just south of Spadina on the north side. Lots of cheapie cute tops there for like $10.
