I have been entranced by the Royal Family since watching Charles & Diana's wedding on my grandma's grainy basement TV when I was a tiny girl. I still remember exactly where I was when Di passed away and pour over every little tidbit of news I come across when there's even the barest whiff of a Windsor.
I also feel very sorry for them - unlike an actor or politician who seeks celebrity, royals are born into it and the spotlight is as inescapable as it is unforgiving. I even cried a little when I watched Helen Mirren in The Queen (a well-deserved Oscar, by the way)!
Are you as fascinated by them as I? Or do you think their celebrity status is completely undeserved?

I'm not quite sure what power the monarch yields. It's a democratic country, laws are voted / passed just like any other, so what is the monarchy all about? What sort of power do they have or what sort of say do they have? I think the queen has to sign/stamp her approval on new laws, but it's just a formality, no? Does she actually have any say in the goings on of the country?
I, with the rest of the world, felt so bad for Princess Di; a whirlwind marriage only to be cheated on and dumped so publicly. She tries to find her own happiness and gets killed (debatable, I know).
I guess I don't really know much about them to really be curious about them, and I feel that their presence is more of a tradition than anything useful.
I'm actually not at all curious about celebrity lives either, so the same feeling extends to the royal family.
As far as their private lives go, I also feel sorry for them.
Celebrity chooses to give up their privacy, where as these people are
born into the public eye. And it's really not their choice, it's not something they can ever escape from if they wanted to.

I used to quite interested in the Royal family but my interest has waned. It's the best paying job for the least amount of work. That's a lot of money for a figurehead.
