I'm not from Ottawa but have been there a number of times visiting people.
The Byward Market is a must visit. It's like the St. Lawrence Market but with lots of little shops, restaurants and street vendors.
At Dow's Lake you can rent kayaks, canoes and paddle boats and paddle up the Rideau, which is a lot of fun and not expensive.
You definitely want to bring your rollerblades and go up Colonel By on Sundays as they close the road down that day and make it a pedestrian zone.
Downtown is just really cute in general and there are a lot of shops and restaurants to check out. I haven't gone to enough shops or restaurants to recommend any in particular, but there are plenty to choose from.
Gabriel's Pizza on Rideau St. is probably the best pizza I've ever had in my life and they will deliver to you anywhere. They delivered to us on a boat (we were parked on the side of the Rideau) on Canada Day, which was pretty cool.
Have fun, it is a really sweet city! Hopefully someone who lives there can give you some tips too!

I don't know if this reply is too late but I'll post anyway. :) MissChickie has a lot of great suggestions, so I'll just add to hers.
Bank St. in the Glebe area also has a lot of cute little shops (between Glebe Ave and 5th Ave, I think).
There are usually events going on around town. You can find a lot of them on these websites:
As for food, there are a lot of great restaurants in town. Prices are ok, not too expensive. I love Khao Thai in the Byward Market, Efes Turkish Restaurant on Preston and I have reviews for both of those places. If you are down on Preston (and Carling), you can walk down Preston and find Little Italy where there are tons of Italian restaurants. Dow's Lake is also located on Preston and Carling. Blue Cactus in the Byward Market is also one of my favourites.
If you are looking for a good dessert place, Oh So Good on 25 York St. is great (Market area)!!
Sightseeing: There are lots of museums in town. Nature museum, War museum, Art gallery...those are all in the downtown area. There's also the Royal Canadian Mint on Sussex Dr. and they usually offers tours in the summer. Also, across the river, there's the Museum of Civilization that's really great to visit. I think they have a special exhibit going on right now called the "Treasures of China". I haven't seen it but I think it'll be very interesting.
I live in Ottawa, so I can go on and on about what you can do. If you haven't made your trip yet and want more specific suggestions, feel free to drop me a note!! :)
