One of our recent articles offers insightful questions to consider when thinking about switching jobs/careers. It reminded me of some of the worst jobs I've ever had, including a particularly aggravating 9 months in women's retail at the mall.
What was the worst job you had, and how did you deal with it?

I worked in women's retail for a few years, and it wasn't the job that was so bad, but it was the inventory counts that were horrible! Every few months head office wants to take an inventory count, and that means that either we come into the store and count every single item usually overnight while the store is closed. Just imagine racks of accessories and each one has to be tagged and counted, and then double counted. It would take several hours and definitely one of the worst tasks involved with retail.

I've worked at a bunch of odd jobs with my husband and the worst one was when we dug up someone's septic tank..... the real old type ,out in the country...P.U..... and I thought cleaning out barns was stinky work...eyes watering....hot summer day...need I say more,,,,
|"old school" boss-literally!! on Jul 31, 2010 @ 08:23 pm|
I had one 'boss' who was elderly....and among many strange requests, the one that sticks in my head when I saw this topic goes a little something like this....
Being a female, I have my period ....of course. Well after being at my job for about 4 months, my 'boss' pulled me aside and told me he was unhappy with something. As I was mentally making a list of anything/everything that I could have possibly done wrong, he proceeded to tell me that he didn't want me leaving my used feminine hygiene products in the waste can in the bathroom. My immediate reaction was ....???? I asked him what the problem was and he said that the blood oxidizes and makes it unsafe for everyone who goes into the bathroom....ummmm, whaaaa?
The solution (according to him), was that if I had to use the bathroom and I was on my period....that I was to take a separate bag in with me. Then I would put the 'used' product into the bag, come out of the bathroom, go outside the office, and place the bag into the trash cans along side the building. This 'procedure' had to be followed every time that I used the bathroom.
Keep in mind, I would take the trash out at the end of the day (everyday).
That job lasted about 6 months....the last straw was when the boss' wife accused me of purposely not sending an item in the mail....um, SEE YA!

I worked reception at a yoga studio once and they were horrible to me! There's really no other word to describe one of the owners other than: a bully! I remember trying sooo hard to do things as they asked and she constantly attempted to put me down and make me feel incompetent with her snide comments.
When I realized I had enough:
There was only one full-time receptionist and 2 part-timers, so when the full-timer quit suddenly I thought I'd make a good impression by taking on a LOT of extra shifts (bearing in mind I was working 2 jobs at the time). They offered to raise my pay so I thought things were working out! Then after working like a dog for 2 weeks, pay day came around and they completely denied offering me the raise and implied that I was being ungrateful!!!! I was so angry I quit on the spot and had to involve a few lawyers in my family to get my last paycheck!
I feel riled up just from thinking about it again!!
