In the winter dogs still have to go outside walking in the snow with or without little booties. Since I was a kid every night at bedtime I would rub vaseline on a dog's paws. I do it at bedtime so it seeps in the pads not my carpets. I intend to do it for my puppies; their first winter.

Just remember that dog feet are supposed to be rough - so they can take the elements. Vaseline also might cause them to slip as they don't have a lot of grip.
They do have products made specifically for dogs that you apply prior to walking them that will protect them from the salt - if they lick it, it's perfectly safe, and it won't create a sticky mess on your carpet or floors.
