Did you guys here about this? It's what I worry about every time I go into the ocean. An Ontario woman from Orangeville was at a resort in Cancun and decided to cool off after playing beach volleyball. She was only in waist deep water when it attacked her. They are saying they think the shark was looking for a place to give birth and she got too close, which is why it attacked.

Shocking isn't it? Mexico isn't exactly known for shark attacks.

Yes, this is why I have the heebie jeebies about swimming in the ocean. I still do it, but it freaks me out. I will never be able to go scuba diving.

... and I've always thought the worst that could happen in shallow water was a jelly fish sting! This is terrible.

That's terrifying!! I usually feel safe in the ocean when the area is supposed to be shark-free but it's stories like these that really make me worried.
I actually went snorkelling with miniature sharks in early 2010. I saw 5 and they were only 1-2 feet long and it was in an area where they have never had a shark attack, so I really didnt feel worried at all.
But that same trip, I was snorkelling in a reef (in a different area) and I was so entranced by the stunning coral and bright fish that I suddenly found myself at the end of the shelf. I had been in water only about 5 feet deep and suddenly the sea floor dropped and it was pitch black underneath me and I had no clue how deep it was. It was frightening to say the least not knowing what can be around.
