A friend of a friend really helped me out of a jam last month. I want to get something really nice to thank him and thought a gift basket would be appropriate. I can't afford something crazy expensive but would like to give something that looks like it's expensive seeing as he hadn't helped me I probably would've had to spend a few hundred dollars otherwise. Does anyone know where I could get a really nice gift basket? Or any ideas for a really nice thank you present?

I think gift baskets are better for women than for men. I would do something that suits him. Is he the kind of guy that would be thrilled with a good bottle of wine or a case of his favourite beer? Is there a sporting event you can get him tickets to? Most guys I know are pretty easy going when it comes to helping their friends and won't expect a huge thank you, but something that acknowledges that you appreciate him is a good idea. A GC to a restaurant is also a nice way to go if you can afford it.

I think misschickie has the right idea about a gift for a guy. However, if you think your friend would really like a gift basket, then why not put it together yourself instead of buying it. You can get a basket, some clear cellophane gift wrap sheets and a spool of ribbon from the dollar store. Then as MC suggested, throw in a bottle of wine, a few beers, a thank you card, etc. How about a gift certificate to the movie theaters? This way, you can customize the gift basket to his taste and you can probably save some money by not paying for the packaging.
