When I was a kid, I remember my parents and grandparents going to the grocery store about once a month and coming home with almost two carts full of food and other necessities. Since they bought everything they needed at once, there were rarely times where a second trip was necessary.
Now that I'm older I find this very hard to do. Even if I do buy everything I need at once, I find myself running out of things within a week or so. I often resort to short trips to the grocery store for milk, toilet paper and bread. It seems to me like no matter how much of it I buy, we always run out! Sometimes I wonder if this has to do with the economy in the 90's or if I'm just bad at managing my grocery list.
I'm curious to see what every one else's opinions and grocery habits!
How often do you go grocery shopping? Do you buy everything at once, or do you prefer small trips only when you really need something?

stock up on perishables? Once a month shopping wouldnt allow for fresh fruit and veg - either you'd run out or it would rot ( if bought in large quanties).
For a family with 3 adults and 1 child we do a big shop every Sunday and very rarely need to run out for 'extras' during the week. I make a list (and compile my coupons.) I have a stock on hand of products we use alot of - like in the basement you can always find a case of tetra apple juice, case of Mac and Cheese, couple 12 packs of pop, case of T.P etc. We have very little cupboard space so luckily we can store non perishables downstairs.
Each week I take a quick look at what is soon to run out and then it gets put on that weeks list. I dont drive so running out every couple days to shop would be time consuming (and Id rather spend my time other ways.)

My grandparents always had a small garden with lettuce, tomatoes, and I believe some herbs and a couple fruits, so I don't think they needed to go to the store for that.
We usually buy a lot of frozen fruits and vegetables, some bananas every once in a while but they'll last about a week. We don't have any kids so I'm sure that contributes to the poor grocery list.

I try to go once per week - that way I can catch every week's new batch of sales and stock up, plus I have plenty of fresh perishables. We are a family of 5, so in truth I need to stock up once a week.
I do run out if there is an urgent need, but lately have gotten quite good at managing a stockpile like Guppy so it's only if we have a last minute dinner party and I need specific ingredients that an extra trip is warranted.
Actually, I'm peeved when I miss a week if there are good deals to be had. I'm so careful with my grocery budget that I refuse to pay full retail unless absolutely necessary.
|Twice a week on Oct 21, 2010 @ 01:30 pm|
I tend to go on Wednesday and Sundays. I typically buy mostly fresh fruits and veggies so I need to make a stop at the grocery store at least twice a week to make sure everything stays fresh. There are times when I'm to busy to fit in the Wednesday shopping trip so I have to strech it out a bit more which I do find difficult to do.
