If this happened to you, would you expect some sort of a refund?

I was at a restaurant last night with two friends.  We had a great night, but when desserts arrived, my friend realized there was gum stuck to her designer pants from the booth.  As you know, gum is almost impossible to get off. 

The server, who had been amazing up until now just shrugged her shoulders and made the gee, sucks to be you - wish I could help but I won't face and that was the end of it.  No offer of any kind to do something for her aside from getting a wet napkin.  It's a nice restaurant.  Not fancy, but the kind where each of us spent $60 on our food and drink.

Restaurants are responsible for the overall cleanliness of the table and the booth. Obviously they can't control if a selfish slob decides to stick a wad of gum on the seat, but you think they'd do something for the next customer who ends up sitting on it.

I think they should have at least offered her a discount off her meal or a gift certificate of some sort.  A shrug and gee that sucks face hardly makes up for a ruined pair of pants or the hours she will spend trying to get the gum off.  We were all surprised there was no offer of any kind and left with kind of a bad taste in our mouths.

What do you think is reasonable in this situation?

The server should have reported this immediately to the manager who would have been in the best position to offer some sort of reparation. In my experience, when the manager's involved, he/she usually goes out of his/her way to make sure the customer leaves in a good mood.

I think this was the server's mistake, less so the restaurant's. The restaurant is absolutely responsible for the cleanliness of their establishment, but unfortunately such issues are more quickly discovered by the customer sitting in it. This is where proper customer service would have turned this sweet instead of sour.

I totally understand not wanting to cause a scene, but your friend should have asked to speak to the manager about it. The server certainly should have contacted the manager right away, but since they didn't, your friend shouldn't have let it slide...that's really upsetting to ruin a good pair of pants!

Manager, and free meals all around. Unacceptable.

p.s. makes you wonder-if she had gum on her pants....that means they aren't cleaning like they should which could lead to the question, "What's really going on in the kitchen?"

I totally agree with everyone! Free meal and a proper apology! When you're shelling out $60 per person you should be expecting a certain level of service. Then again uncleanliness in a restaurant is NOT acceptable regardless what you're paying for the meal.

And it really does make you wonder, if the tables are this dirty.......?

The waitress should always get the manager!I think the manager and the restaurant would not be happy knowing they were not contacted about a situation with a customer.I would write a quick email to the restaurants website management or contact the manager.They should be aware of how there server is acting towards customers.Im sure they will be super embarrassed and offer you at the least some gift certificates. A restaurant/management do not want to lose customers!Unfortunately some workers who dont have the stress ad worries of Management often dont care, there just there to get a paycheck .There are also many who go over and beyond to make a customer happy.Sorry you had a server who oblivious did the the wrong thing.

shame on them for not doing anything about it. I would've said something to the management but the server should have offered. You shouldn't have to make a boob of yourself to get proper treatment.

I think you should've gotten at least a discount or a coupon for something. I hate it when gum is stuck to tables and you touch it.. it's despicable!
