Lately I've been seeing a lot of posts on craigslist and other places. Many people are leaving the country and need homes for their pets. It breaks my heart seeing this as I know just how many pets never find homes and end up abandoned as euthanised.
Please, please, pleeeease if you have an inkling you might ever move country or change your situation don't adopt a pet.
Or treat it like a family member and bring it with you. It does take extra money and yes, it is annoying, but otherwise there is the chance you are leaving your animal to possible be euthanised. If that breaks your heart, then try your best, but be aware of the reality.
Sorry if this upsets anyone!

I know in some cases there really is no other choice, but I don't believe that's true for every case :(

If people don't leave their human babies behind, they shouldn't leave their fur babies behind in my opinion. People abandoning pets is one of my pet peeves, if you get an animal it's your responsibility for it's lifetime.

I totally agree Kaymayc, but I feel some people may definitely not. For me, I felt like the people trying to convince me to leave my cats behind when I moved used the 'their best interest' line. And while I know a flight and a new country is stressful, neither of my two cats were particularly anxious and adapted easily.
If I'd left them behind, there's no way to tell how they'd cope with my being gone, or if a new owner would do right by them...

I could never bring myself to leave my dog behind. He's part of the family and just thinking about it breaks my heart. I don't know how people can find the courage to part from them. I know in some cases, they really don't have a choice but at least make sure to leave them with a family who you know will care for them the way you did, if not better. It's so sad how many pets are abandoned for this reason.

I'm seeing it so much right now, prettyrainbow and knowing how unlikely it is that the pets will get homes, just kills me. In Montreal in particular it's so bad :(

I completely agree! I would never move without my cats! I treat them as family too.

Yes for me this is a heartbreaking topic; I've seen and heard about it so often.I have the softest place in my heart for all animals

Moving them is stressful and a bit extra money but I view them as family members. I wouldn't leave my kids and I wouldn't leave my dog. Of course there are extenuating circumstances, but quite often I think people just can't be bothered.

Well said, my dears. I really find myself wondering how true their reasons for giving up their pets are true. I'm sure it must happen, but for most of us, we would know if there is a chance we may have to leave the country and make the responsible choice and not get a pet in the first place.

I feel especially in Montreal people just get cats especially and sometimes dogs without even thinking about it.
You have to be prepared for 15 or sometimes more years of care. I kind of get it if you have a baby and the baby is allergic or the animal is not good with kids, but I see people just not having time when they have kids and getting rid of the pet.
I know it's going to be hard in 4-6 years when I have a baby, with three cats, but that's on me. I shouldn't have adopted three if I wasn't willing to make it work.
Sorry for ranting, ladies!
