Is it harmful to take maternity vitamins when you're not pregnant? My nail's were the best they ever were when I was expecting my boys and I believe part of that was do to the vitamins. I was thinking about trying them now, but wasn't sure if it was a bad thing to do when you're not pregnant. Any thoughts on this??

I don't think you should on Sep 22, 2014 @ 08:34 am

From what I have read it could be harmful and doesn't really give any benefits. As they are formulated for pregnant women or those who wish to become pregnant they are not meant for long term use. There are high amounts of folic acid and if you take too much it would hide a vitamin B-12 deficiency (should you have one or develop one). Prenatal vitamins are also high in iron... it can build up in your system and cause nausea, constipation, etc...

don't take them on Sep 22, 2014 @ 09:34 am

I would not recommend taking them as they are specifically designed for when you are pregnant and have extra types of vitamins to be absorbed by a fetus as well.
If you are interested in vitamins for better nails maybe try taking a multi-vitamin for woman and biotin pills (I bought mine on amazon) and they are for hair and nails and work well!

It was just a thought, I'd never take something with out talking to my Dr. I just wanted to know if anyone here had an answer for me first.

If you're planning on getting pregnant on Sep 22, 2014 @ 07:46 pm

If you're planning on getting pregnant in the near future you should start taking them right away. The only real reason to take prenatal vitamins is to prevent neural tube defects. Really you shouldn't have to take vitamins at all you will end up peeing out most of the vitamins. Eat a yogurt and have a piece of fruit every day and you will get all the benefits for vitamins. Most doctors don't recommend you taking vitamins at all unless you are trying to get pregnant. The myth that prenatal vitamins are great for hair, nails and skin are all linked to the fact that you're usually pregnant when you're on them!
