My husband and I are talking about getting a dog. We lost our beautiful black lab three years ago to cancer after spending 13 lovely years with her. After we lost her my hubby and I swore we wouldn't get another pet because losing them is just too hard on us. The last few months we have come around and we are now considering getting another dog, we have so much love to give! We miss having a dog around to love and play with. The only problem is I have developed allergies and can only get a dog that is hypoallergenic.Sooo, my fellow Chickies, any suggestions on breeds that are hypoallergenic and a great family dog?

Yay for a new doggie!! I came across this site, which not only mentions if it's hypoallergenic or not...but also some of the traits known to the breed.

Hello Deane B,
So nice to meet you.You said you were thinking about getting a Hypoallergenic Dog and I was wondering, what kind of a Dog is that?I'm sure it's not a breed just a saying because you have allergies.I have Asthma and was thinking about getting a Tea Cup Dog.I always had a Dog,the last one was a Beagel and after 18 years,we had to have her put to sleep because she got Bowel Cancer. That was quite a while ago now bwcause we have two Beautiful Brother and Sister Cats.Molly and Jake and they are my ife,I love them dearly.Good luck with your Dog searching.

Greetings fellow lab lover. I have an 8 year old chocolate who I have loved since she was 12 weeks old, and has been through so much with, my most faithful loyal friend, so I understand how devestating losing your first fur kid must have been. If your a retriever lover, have you thought about labradoodles or golden doodles for their hypo allergenic qualities? They are a lab or retriever mixed with a Standard Poodle. The size and stature of a lab, with poodle fur (or hair). Everyone I have met is sweet, smart, and through the roof cute.

Nice to meet you too, Angelwings. Hypoallergenic dogs usually have a coat that is hair instead of fur (I think that's right)! My allergies kick into high gear when I'm around cats as well.

Thanks Wendy Roy, I have been looking into those breeds as well. I was hoping to rescue a dog, my last dog was a rescue. But where I live there are more people looking for dogs than there are dogs available. I may end up going to a breeder. In any case, I will be patient and keep looking...the right dog will eventually turn up.

I'm sorry about the passing of your black lab. Dogs are really a dear part of the family.
The Bichon breed is hypoallergenic. I have a Maltese and he hardly ever sheds and is such a great companion for the entire family.

My daughter bought a golden doodle two years ago and he is one amazing dog. He has the best personality and he is gorgeous. You can get different sizes depending on the type of poodle that the golden retriever is bred with. The only draw back is they like to chew especially when they are young so make sure you pick things up. These are great family dogs. She got hers from a breeder in Ontario. I , myself have always had Shetland sheepdogs, or mini collies. But if you are allergic this is the breed for you. These dogs too are beautiful , easy going and good with children.
