Has anyone ever heard of a child being diagnosed with an abdominal migraine? What came to that diagnosis?

Yes. A friend of ours had a child who was. He received treatment at the Alberta Children's Hospital. For this particular child, it was a lot of testing and observation until they were finally able to diagnose. This child is non-verbal and very developmentally delayed, so it was more difficult to figure it out, since he could not effectively communicate to his parents and doctors what he was feeling. Now that they have figured it out, it's easier to avoid the triggers that they've figured he has and to treat them. Sometimes, he still ends up in thenChildrens Hospital for treatment, but it is getting easier now that they've figured out the problem. Does your child experience them?

I was actually diagnosed with abdominal migraines when I was a teenager. I think it was sort of a throw away diagnosis, like they couldn't really figure out what was going on with me, and this sort of gave an explanation, even if it wasn't perfect it was "good enough." The thing is I also have severe depression, GAD, and social anxiety, and I think those problems where the cause of my stomach migraines. I would get extremely anxious and have panic attacks, and the days when my mental health was really bad, I would be in severe physical pain. And then I did cognitive behaviour therapy to manage my anxiety, and took some medications, and the stomach problems went away. I have since stopped taking the medications, but my mental health issues are more manageable and not as severe as they used to be, plus I have learned to cope better. The only time I get stomach migraines now is when I am severely stressed. It's funny how much mental health can affect your physical health.

I have suffered from migraines ever since I was four, but I have never heard of an abdominal migraine!? That sounds so surreal? What is it! (I guess I could just Google the term, lol).

Wow. Glad you have that under control now. It's crazy how closely our mental and emotional health are linked to our physical health.
