I've always seemed to have bad joints, but lately my knees have been cracking a lot more. They normally crack when I squat or do something that causes them to bend rapidly, but nowadays they sometimes crack even when I walk down the stairs. I can feel them give for a second, crack, and then I'd feel pain for a bit.
This really shouldn't be happening at my age!
Any suggestions? I've thought about getting a knee brace or trying supplements.

My lower back cracks and my massage therapist told me it's because the muscles in the area are tight, so it cracks to relieve some tension.? You may need to stretch it out or strengthen the muscles around.? For my lower back, I started doing strengthening exercises at home and it seems to be helping a lot.
Swimming may help you out because it doesn't put any pressure on your joints and it builds muscle!

Have been my whole life. don't know what causes it. Have heard it's related to hydration. Drink some more water?

My shoulder has a that problem but it's more of a "pop" than a crack...the doctor told me to swim it out but I just haven't made the effort :( There may be a similar workout or something that would help your knees! I suggest you see a doctor before it gets worse!

I have this happen too, but it comes and goes. For me, it seems to be around (or shortly after) times when I'm particularly stressed or when I'm ill. I have always attributed it to being tense and tightening my muscles. Then, when I finally relax, my muscles ease and my bones juggle around a little.
I could be way off. This is just a pet theory.
