I was in a really bad car accident a couple months ago and my doctor recommended I get an MRI for my spinal cord. Since I am young the doctor did not want to do x-rays because my injury is so close to my reproductive organs. I was just wondering if anyone has had a MRI before and if they could tell me a bit about their experience? How long do you have to be in the machine for? What to wear? Any questions I should ask?
I am usually fairly calm when it comes to the doctors, although the possibility of spiral cord surgery is putting me on edge. The spiral cord is not something you want to mess around with.
Thank you in advance!

First of all I am so sorry to hear that you were in a bad car accident. I hope all is well with you, I have never had a MRI before but I did go with my friend Lisa because she is claustrophobic and she was so scared to go by herself. So I went with her to give her moral support. When it was over she said it was not that as bad as she thought it was going to be and it did not take to long. I know it can be scary to have to go through but your health is important. Maybe you can get a friend or if you have a partner get someone to go with you it really helps. Good luck.

Thank you for your reply and your concern. I am very lucky I am not claustrophobic. It was very nice of you to go for moral support. I have a friend coming with me as well, mostly for company because hospital appointments always seem to take forever. Thank you for the good luck wish! I still have a month and a half until the appointment so I have time to do my research.

Hi there. I've had a few MRI's for various things. When they do them on my heart, I have to get undressed from the waist up and lay down on the machine and they tell you try not to move. They stand in this little glass cubicle and watch you while they operate the machine. It makes a whirring noise and mine wasn't bad at all. I'm in the US, so our machines may be different. It slides in and out of this chamber and it's like being in outer space to me. It's not scary, and only takes a couple minutes. Since yours is the spine, I don't know if you will have to undress and they make you take your jewelry off. Again, yours may be different, but that's been my experience with having MRI's. It's really simple and quick. Hope this helps some. Have a great day and don't worry too much. Ginger.
