I got my period last month and it was four days late, i thought it to be a little strange because my periods are always on time, but i didn't think much if it because it was a normal period. This month my period is six days late, I did have sex once but it was protected ofcourse and just for peace of mind I took a pregnancy test and just as I thought it was negative. Should I be worried? I know I am not pregnant but I am worried that something else might be wrong. I have never missed a period and it has always been on time. I am not on b/c or any other meds so I know that's not the cause. Can anyone help me? Give me some peace of mind? Thanks

There could be many reasons why your cycle is changing, and you should - as always - double check with your Gynecologist to be sure. We can only give you anecdotal feedback here that should never take the place of professional advice :)
Having said that, in my personal experience, certain things do affect my cycle:
1. Are you going through a time of hormonal change? For instance, if you are just a few years post puberty (eg. in your early 20s) or premenopausal (eg. late 30s or later), changes are not uncommon. My cycle didn't even really settle down properly until after I had my first baby, and every pregnancy after that adjusted it further. I used to be a 35-day cycle or so; I've been as frequent as 25-days, but am currently approx 30-days.
2. Are you stressed lately? Stress changes your hormonal mix, and this can have longish lasting effects. It can revert to your old cycle after the stress has passed, or you may be permanently on a new rhythm.
3. Have you experienced changes in your weight? Weight loss or gain can affect your period, and if you're an extreme exerciser you could lose your period completely. I've heard that athletes can have this problem.
4. Any overall changes to your diet or sleep habits? This can go hand in hand with point #2, where body chemistry changes may manifest themselves through your period cycle. This happens in nature all the time - animals who have a poor diet or are stressed do not go into heat because biologically they are not fit to gestate young.
I would feel comforted that you are still getting your cycle. Complete stop or continuous spotting are, in my extremely limited knowledge, worse warning signs. Have yourself checked out, but in the meantime the best thing you can do for yourself is to ease up on the worry. Take a mental health day and spoil yourself with all your favourite things :)
Good luck, and keep us posted!

I am 26 and lately i have had alot of stress, and I have gained about 15 lbs in the past three months so I am hoping that's the reason for this. I figure I'll give it another week and if it doesn't show up by then I will give my doc a call. I am very stressed and then this happens which stresses me out even more lol I def understand that this is only a place for personal advice and do not expect any medical information or advice, all I need right now is some comfort until next week when I will make the app if my period doesn't show up, thanks mamaluv!!!!

Mine is quite consistent as well to the point where I could say the Third Wed of every month, etc but every few months it will change to something else that is quite consistent. Like Claire said, checking with your Doctor is always the safest bet but I wouldn't worry too much about it being a few days late. The stress you mentioned would definitely do it and fluctuations in weight can play a roll as well.
We actually interviewed a Doctor about this because this is a question people ask in the forums often. Here is her feedback.

I just wanted to let you ladies know that I got it today, only six days late :) so I guess that's not so bad, I just tend to worry alot and when something out of the ordinary happens I do freak out lol, thanks so much for making me not worry so much and just to be on the safe side I still made an app just to check on things so my mind is completely at ease thanks again!!!
|I love that you're celebrating :) on Jul 09, 2010 @ 06:13 pm|
Isn't it funny how we desperately want our period when it's expected, but otherwise curse it? Just one of those things....

I was totally thinking the same thing today :) I even discussed it with my girls and we had a little laugh about it, We hate out period so much, but then embrace it and can't wait for it to show up and almost miss it when there is a scare but as soon as it comes we got right back to hating it again lol

Yes the idea of celebrating over getting your period when you've had it for years is funny, but in this situation, chin chin!

If you're not on a pill I've found that periods can be early/late by 7 days. I know when I'm a few days late I start to panic but it always comes within 7 days. If you're cycle is becoming very irregular you could always talk to your doctor about it. I have a friend who used to get her period months apart which is not right.
I remember also reading somewhere that a pregnancy test won't work that early, if you're only 5 days late or so but I don't remember exactly where I read that or if it's true. I think it can start detecting 6 weeks after your last period? But don't quote me on that. I also think it depends on the test you're using and what it is testing.
Glad everything worked out though!

My OB/GYN always says that while the home tests can be accurate, they are prone to false results and she doesn't trust them. She wouldn't even test me when I came in until my period was at least 2 weeks late, and then only via blood test.
I think it's quite the racket some of these home tests have going, where they claim the test can detect the hormone before you've even missed your period. I do believe that these tests could be capable of this - however, I don't think the accuracy would be as high. Think about it - when you're 5 minutes pregnant, your hormone levels are very very low. 'Accurate' results are seen when the levels have had a chance to rise.
I experienced low fertility for years and I know how frustrating that can be. But whether you're hoping for your period or hoping for a pregnancy, the only thing you can do is be patient. Taking oodles of tests won't help because you won't be sure. Soon you're buying 5 or 6 tests and still not absolutely sure of the result.
Funny thing is, you're stressing about it even more and so that could upset your cycle's timing even more!
Having said that, I've been in a stable committed marriage for years. If I 'oopsed', it wouldn't be so bad. I can understand how someone who's not ready for children would see this differently :)
