I am extremely skinny, and although it is genetic and I realize there probably isn't too much I can do about it, I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to gain weight in a healthy way?
I am SICK of people asking me if I have an eating disorder - I DON'T! Also, sometimes I feel self conscious, like if I wear a T shirt or bathing suit, like everyone is staring at me and thinking about how skinny I am.

Eating unhealthy food high in saturated and trans fat is never a good way to gain weight. Good for you for wanting to do it the healthy way! If you naturally have a fast metabolism, it won't work so well anyway. Your body will burn it off all really quickly, and you will be left feeling fatigue. Not to mention, it will still clog up your arteries and increase your bad cholesterol.
Make sure you eat healthy fats, such as omega 3 essential fatty acids, that come from foods like salmon, tuna, almonds, eggs.
Now I am going to ask you if you are vegetarian, because if you are then it is even more difficult to gain weight. Some vegetarians do not get enough protein and other nutrients such as iron and vitamin B12 because they do not consume animal products. You must make sure you eat enough protein! One thing that will help is supplements, the protein will give you extra calories that you need.
One important thing is to increase your calorie intake. EAT MORE! And better yet, eat smaller meals throughout the day more often. You want to get your body used to eating more often. Try smaller meals throughout the day.
Weight training. It can help you gain more muscle (bulk). See, exercise does make you gain weight, in a good way!
If you are feeling a little intimidated with weight training, start with changing your diet first. Eating more (a lot more) than what you normally eat will definitely help.
I also think it is important that if you are really underweight, that you make sure that you do not have other health problems associated with dramatic weight loss. I have a friend who has a protein absorbance defiency, and her body has trouble absorbing protein.

Next time someone asks you if you're anorexic, ask them why they are so fat. It's equally rude. People shouldn't feel they have the right to comment on another person's body unless they are geniunely concerned for your health.

I was gonna add to that. Yes, if you want to gain weight, it is good to do it the healthy way.
But really, no one has the right to make those comments. Honestly! What is wrong with people... they can be so rude. If you know you eat and that you don't have an ED, then that is nothing of anyone else's concern.
It really shouldn't be acceptable for people to be able to say "you're so skinny" and not "you're so fat." It's equally bad.

I have had co-workers make rude jokes and comments about my weight as well. It isn't acceptable at all, and it shouldn't be allowed.
It is the general misconception that it is okay make fun of skinny people but not fat. Either way, it isn't right.
I have just found that I really have to just accept the way that I am. Everyone is different. There is no one size fits all!
I was watching Tyra Banks Show, and I'm sure most of you know about her People magazine cover -161 lbs, and I still feel sexy!. It was left untouched and she announced her weight to the entire world. One thing I thought was amazing was that she had a special on her show, stating that everyone should celebrate who they are (whether you are over or underweight!)

Anonymous 1, if it makes you feel any better, our metabolism naturally slows down as we age. And this may not be as much of an issue to you when you're a little bit older :)
Either that, or those stupid people just won't bother you anymore. :D

I'm the original poster, and just want to say thanks for all the tips/words of wisdom. Most of the time I just don't let people's comments bother me, but after hearing this stuff for your whole life, it tends to get pretty annoying!
To anonymous poster #2, haha that's so true! People are always saying 'you're so skinny - do you eat?' and yet if I were to say to a fat person, 'you're so fat - do you ever stop eating?' (Just to clarify, not that I would ever say that!), people would absolutely FREAK OUT.
And yeah, my mom told me once she was also incredibly skinny when she was younger, and now she's still thin, but not super thin anymore so it definitely gives me hope :)

I have gotten that a lot too, growing up. Maybe not as much, but my body resembles Abraham Lincoln's - haha (super tall and thin). And I do not have Marfan Syndrome! In this case I inherited this from my father. And because I have gotten involved with modelling, people like to assume that I am always dieting and we all of us have eating disorders.
Let me tell you, my friends who model are definitely NOT anorexic. Some of them eat whatever they want, while others (like me) enjoy eating healthy.
I try to gain weight too, but more specifically muscle (those were my tips for gaining mass). And believe me, that is really difficult because I have really long limbs!
I know what it is like, women give me looks as well. I just try not to let it bother me.

I think it's so funny how we're all slowly revealing ourselves! I'm annonymous #2! hahahaha! It's crazy, but I've heard stuff like this too which is ridiculous because I'm not even that thin but it always bothered me. I always think "What gives you the right to comment on my body?" Honestly, I'm 115lb and 5"5 so, it's not like anyone could say they think my health is in danger.
I think people sometimes say stuff because they can't accept that some people are just naturally thin.

I agree that unless someone is worried about your health they shouldn't say anything. Commenting on people's body types unless it is meant as a compliment just shouldn't happen. period.

I know a girl who is a 00 and she eats nonstop. She is also trying to bulk up because she too, gets the unhealthy comments. I say go to your doctor, get checked over and make sure that you are 100% healthy. Maybe that is just your build. I say ask your doctor on the safest ways for you to gain a healthy weight. He/she may say that you are perfectly fine. Maybe you just need to build up some muscle? I'm not a doctor, so I suggest you ask yours.
