Maybe I'm not the best person to answer this because I had one really
bad one once, followed by about 3 in the next 1-2 years and then never
again. The bad one scared me because I didn't know what it was and it
kept getting worse and worse. Here's my completely unglam solutions for
* Don't assume it's a yeast infection unless you
have had been checked out by a doctor. Embarrassing, uncomfortable...
but crucial because there are other problems which can look like yeast
infections but are other things.
* Avoid long term antibiotics at
all costs. Even one course of antibiotics can send many women spiraling
into a yeast infection. This is what did me in. Antibiotics are not
selective and kill both good and bad bacteria in your body. Our bodies
are perfectly balanced 'down there' with yeast and healthy bacteria
naturally occurring in perfect quantities.
* Cotton undies.
Boring. Granny but effective! Or go Marilyn Monroe and make a habit to sleep in nothing but your fragrance.
The area needs to breathe and it's not natural to lock in the moisture
with unbreathable layers. This might be what's happening to you - the
feminine protection and whatever you are wearing might be creating an
environment which allows yeast to thrive each month.
* Hot, humid climates also (for the reasons above) can be catalysts.
hope this helps a little. Once you have it, you can try to increase the
healthy bacteria in your body, and even apply a little unflavoured

I have recently been struggling with the same problem. Part of the issue is that my stress levels have recently increased, so I know that's a contributing factor.
Make sure you're wearing 100% cotton underwear (or as close as you can get) and avoid really tight pants. The area needs to breathe down there!
Consider switching to the Diva Cup or as natural a tampon product as you can find. The plastic in most pads closes off the area and keeps the yeast nice and cozy in there.
During bad outbreaks use a yeast treatment like Monistat. I know some people avoid medicine because of side effects or other concerns, but in my experience it starts with itching and then moves on to noticeable odor. You do NOT want to deal with that, I promise you! I find the 3-day treatment to be the most effective for me.
Consider some dietary changes. Certain foods can encourage yeast growth, and some people claim that other foods discourage yeast growth. I have not found that dietary changes got the whole job done, but I do think it helps somewhat. You can google for details, but in short it's avoiding yeasty products (like breads), carbs (especially white flour products), and sugar. Load up on protein and non-starchy veggies. Dairy products are recommended by some and avoided by others.
And in the end, know that it will take a while for this to clear up completely. I had outbreaks for probably 6 months before it finally settled down. In fact, I've only been outbreak free for about 2 months so I consider myself to still be in the danger zone.

TashaCat has some great points as well, especially her first point. I thought I had a yeast infection once and it turned out to be a raging UTI that developed into a kidney infection. Of course I went on an antibiotic treatment as it was quite bad, which then led to an actual yeast infection, but I felt treating the kidney infection/UTI was necessary.
So yes - it's extremely important to have a doctor diagnose your infection. I don't think it will harm you to try a yeast infection product as you will probably experience some relief either way (especially from the itchiness), especially because sometimes you can't get in to see your doc on short notice.

Mamaluv, you are right on the mark! Thanks for sharing your very personal journey with the UTI.
Unknowingly treating 'something else' as a yeast infection (aka yeastie) can end up hiding the symptoms temporarily and 'shhh-ing your body's early warning system'. It allows whatever it really is to get worse silently.
This is really interesting; both of you seem to have serial infections. When I had my bad one, I had serial infections which were less intense each time. When you have one yeastie, I wonder if it automatically makes you predisposed for consecutive re-occurring yeasties?
Maybe it takes our bodies longer than we think to get back to the right balance?

Yes, I have heard that once you have a yeastie you might be more susceptible. Of course, you "hear" a lot of stuff that may or may not be true from friends and certainly from the internet.
My personal theory is that it takes a while for your body to get over it and in that time period perhaps you continue to have a small, asymptomatic imbalance just waiting to flare up if the conditions are right.
I knew someone who struggled with infections for years (very stressful personal life at the time), but once she finally got over it, she has not had another infection since.

I know that period can trigger a yeast infections or a mild itching because of the additional bacteria. I've gone through something similar on my period. Usually it would go away on it's own or occasionally I would have to buy an over the counter product like Monistat. I agree with the other ladies- stick to cotton undies that are more breathable. Also, without getting gross, be sure that you are keeping your business clean and bacteria free by wiping front to back. Having intercourse on your period can aggravate things to so try and avoid it.
We've all been there so don't be embarrassed about going to the doctor either, @tashacat is right!

Whenever I feel one might be coming on, I bathe in a tub with vinegar added (about 1/2 cup). It is soothing and if it is a yeast problem, it will go away almost immediately. If you are a total shower person, just dampen a paper towel with warm water, put vinegar on it and wash yourself. That works too. My doctor told me about this!

Thanks for all of your input! I'm definitely going to try the vinegar thing. Did you use any specific type of vinegar? I have both white vinegar and also apple cider vinegar...
I am going to the doctor on Tuesday so hopefully she can shed some light on why it's happening. I also had a bartholin cyst about 2 months ago and I think it might have something to do with that too because the side that I had the cyst on is much more sensitive than the other side. So strange...why can't our bodies just work perfectly all the time!!?? lol

I used to get chronic yeast infections for 2 or 3 years straight. It was absolutely maddening and nothing I did would get rid of it for longer than a week. Being in a long term relationship during this time was difficult and I just remember feeling so bad about myself, thinking I would never be able to date or feel sexy again.
Anyways, the whole point of this is that I haven't had a yeast infection in almost 2 years now. A friend of mine told me about probiotics and how beneficial they are so I started taking them daily and have never felt better. It's amazing. I use the ones specially for vaginal health and has 50 billion live cultures in it. The only annoying part is they need to be kept in the fridge.
