Deli Meats and Pregnancy

Speaking of things to be avoided during pregnancy...I heard that it is bad to eat deli meats while pregnant because of the high doses of nitrates in most deli meats. I was wondering if this was widespread knowledge or not. I just found out recently through research at work...

I didn't know that deli meat was high in nitrates... that's high in salt preservatives, right?

Deli meats are high in preservatives on Jan 27, 2007 @ 01:22 pm

I've been avoiding them for a long time. Most deli meats have a lot of preservatives though I'll have to investigate exactly what kind. You'd think you're being healthy having a subway sandwhich but that's not necessarily true. Quiznos claims their meats don't have all that junk in them so I go there instead.

Yves Veggie Deli on Jan 28, 2007 @ 01:21 am

I don't know if this is that much better, but I eat Yves veggie deli. They claim to not have any preservatives in them, and they are very high in protein and low in fat. They also aren't that much more expensive (vegetarian food costs so much sometimes). They are in the vegetarian food section in the grocery store.

I fooled my boyfriend when I made him a sandwich, he had no idea it was soy instead of turkey lol

....for meat sometimes... Congrats on having him fooled! I tried that once but the complaint was that the texture was off...ah well, back to the drawing board!

Subway vs. Quiznos on Jan 28, 2007 @ 11:46 am

Quiznos subs are so much yummier most of the time too! Yeah I heard the deli meat thing is not good... I am not a big sandwich lover anyway so I guess I will not miss them so much!

Quiznos on Jan 28, 2007 @ 03:00 pm

When I go to Quiznos, I usually get the real chicken sandwiches instead of the deli... do you think that chicken strips (from Subway) also have potassium nitrate?

Good question on Jan 28, 2007 @ 03:23 pm

Not sure it they would have potassium nitrate in their chicken. I think I just like the Quiznos subs more because they are toasted and to me feel more like a meal than a sandwich! :o)
