I started my baby on rice and oat cereal when she was 4 and a half months (ok with doc) and then I tried mashed banana and watermelon she loved the water melon. I have some jarred food as well but she seems to like the fresh fruit better

I skipped all the infant cereals, and started with potato, carrots and sweet potato, my son loved it.

I skipped jarred baby food. Talked with a nutritionist and with her advice started my daughter on high iron foods at 6 months. She had avocado, eggs, mashed potatoes, carrots, cucumber. We did baby led weaning.

Glad to hear I was not the only one skipping purees. My son loved avocado too. Was your pediatrician supportive of this too? When I discussed BLW with mine she was not supportive at all. I'm so glad I stuck with it, by 9 months I could just let my son feed himself and actually relax at mealtimes (for the most part).

I gave our youngest sweet potatoes, squash and a fruit blend but I found he preferred the veggies over the fruit. To this day, his favorite meals are mashed potatoes with butternut squash or a partially frozen banana in his little mesh feeder but we avoid the pre packaged stuff for him at all costs.
I just threw it in the blender when we needed a puree

Look into baby led eating- it's amazing, easy, and the baby has what you have to a degree. Very cool topic.

Agree with the BLW comment. Did this with my son and he could feed himself by 9months.

My dr is very supportive of our choice to do BLW, along with our choice to do extended nursing, AND cloth diapers!! I love our doctor!
The BLW has been great! She is now 9.5 months and eats everything... I have yet to find a food she doesn't like and she refuses to be "fed", she wants to do it all herself!! So she eats whatever we eat for lunch and supper, but for breakfast prefers to just nurse most days.. Though she does love eggs!

My LO is 8 months old and we tried BLW but he just wasn't interested. Yogurt has been the biggest hit. You can mix anything in it but make sure you get the plain full fat versions. I use the cereals but mainly as a thickener for foods that are a bit too runny.
