Apparently there is a Midwife protest going on in Toronto because while though other essential services workers got a raise, they were passed over. In fact according to this article, they've only had 2 raises since 1994.
I don't have a Midwife and not for lack of trying. I called when I was 3 weeks pregnant to every possible waiting list in Toronto and they were all full. People (let's call them liars) were booking into September. Since my due date is July, these women couldn't have even been pregnant at that time and yet there they were on the list ahead of me, "Uh can you add me to the list? I'm -4 weeks pregnant!" That's my little rant. The point is, so many expectant mothers see the value in having a midwife that they are willing to lie and cheat to get on the list.
What do you think? Are Midwives getting the shaft?

I don't see why they should not get a raise they work hard, and are in high demand. That alone should say something. Personally i feel like if you value my input and work then i deserve a raise. These people do as well. It is sad when we have jobs like this that are not compensated fairly.

I personally will likely not use a midwife when I give birth some day but that's mostly because I'm paranoid that something will go wrong and there won't be a doctor around in time. So many things can easily go wrong during labour and delivery. Also, I am 100000% having an epidural! The midwife I would choose (spent a day with her for my clinical practice) transfers care to an obstetrician when an epidural is eventually requested.
So although I will not use a midwife, I do believe they deserve raises. They are still professional, regulated health care providers. Just as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, etc. are. Especially if Alberta midwives makes $25000 more than Ontario midwives... that's just crazy!
