What Not to Wear!

on May 09, 2012 @ 02:29 pm

I've always wanted to watch this show and now an angel has posted all the episodes in HQ on youtube!!  One of my favourite episodes is this one

What do you guys think of this show?  Do you think this is 'cookie cutter' style or something really helpful?

My secret confession is, I have a really hard time dressing well.  As in really.  I don't seem to know what looks good on me!  So I default to looking tomboyish, people just assume I don't care, when really I do but I don't know how... know what I mean?

The episode I linked is helpful 'cuz it has that equation thingy that spells it out.  A top, a bottom, and a layer.

What's your trick to dressing well?  How do you incorporate the seasons styles in with your wardrobe?

i really thin the cookie cutter style is that not good. my tricks to dressing well is to show a lot of skin, its not really slutty its more like if u gota body .. work it. when its winter, i like to wear mini skirt becoz it makes me stand out from the rest of the girls, no one relaly wears skirts in the winter, so ya.for summer is all about tank tops and shortzshortz, i like to get te farmer tan, becoz it looks good for the following season.

Newfound body on May 09, 2012 @ 10:47 pm

I never had a problem dressing well before having kids cuz I had a great bod to dress... I find my new body difficult as I'm very chesty and I find covering that up often leads to looking heavier myself.

Hoping to get my old bod back but until the I do try and wear layers.

books! on May 11, 2012 @ 12:58 pm

Well I have tons of difficulty dressing my now-body. I have tons of ideas to dress a 30lbs thinner me, but not necessarily the current 30lbs heavier me.... I'm a bit of a book freak so I found all the books written by these guys and am going to go check them out!

Here's the list in case anyone's interested:

By Clinton Kelly
-On no she didn't
-Dress your best
-Freakin Fabulous

By Carmindy:
-5min face
-get positively beautiful
-crazy busy beautiful

I actually already own "Crazy busy beautiful" and it's an AWESOME book. It has a ton of DYI (which I know lots of you love) and some really good advise on hair and skin care. I imagine the other two of her books will be equally great. I haven't read any of Clinton Kelly's writings but I'm assuming they'll be as good and informative as he is in person (err..in tv)?

I'll post back and let you ladies know what I think of them and if I get them or not ...

We all do at some point on May 11, 2012 @ 01:27 pm

At least that's how I look at it. This is a great show to give any of us a helping hand. I'd love to go on it, but I'm afraid of what they might say and do the my closet.LOL

Colour.Texture.Pattern.Shine. (new mantra) on May 15, 2012 @ 11:37 pm

I LOVE this show. It always cracks me up that some of the 'contributors' watch the show, but still have their way of dressing. Some are really out there. In the end they are really great women caught in their own black hole of style because they are stuck in a certain way of thinking. I think I love it most because they learn to see more than clothes in that mirror.

I don't think its too cookie-cutter. Loved the 20-ish girl who they put the super-hot-pink hair on. There were a few episodes which reminded me of my own style challenges. We can all get better right?

@Becky - too funny... just read Clinton's books last month. I didn't find them amazing, but he is funny through-out. Thanks for the Carmindy tip!

Love it! on May 30, 2012 @ 09:34 am

I love this show, I don't watch it as much now that they moved it to Tuesdays but I used to watch it all the time when it was on Fridays!

Carmindy is great in print on Jun 19, 2012 @ 09:20 am

Just sent a link to the youtube WNTW full episodes to my friend who loves the show but lives in Dubai now. She is happily watching on her computer. She dresses really well but always takes ideas from this show.

@Becky - Thanks for mentioning the Carmindy books. I am reading 2. Crazy Busy Beautiful is so much fun (and the crazy some-people-do-this beauty input is hilarious!!! Snail slime??) I also really like Get Positively Beautiful. I really think she handles her subject matter well. And much of it is down to earth.

Oh Becky- and I'm struggling with the same thing you are. Dressing after a weight gain is a real pain! Partly because I have to shelve 2/3 of my clothes. Its about changing our mindset and buying pieces for the now. I've decided to buy a few cute inexpensive pieces for summer ... I'll wear them out, and won't feel bad when I discard them when the weight comes off.

good tips on Jun 19, 2012 @ 11:47 am

I don't mind it, especially when someone is stuck in a style rut. But if you are comfortable and happy with how you look than that's all that matters.
I am 28 and still have blue hair, I would be pissed if someone brought me on the show, because I like my style and am happy with it, it's just who I am.
I do have to say that watching the show has given me some good advice, like trying things on that you normally wouldn't because you don't know what looks good on you if you don't try. And also not to be stuck on weight gain and tell yourself you'll dress better when you lose weight. Dress for the body you have now, not the one you had/want.
i also think that a lot of times they do still give people good makeovers, and the clothes are still pretty fun. I even remember an episode where a girl colored her hair crazy colors and the hair guy actually dyed it pink because that's who she was, so yeah it's a bit cookie cutter but they do try and keep it unique.
