A 10-year-old Roma girl gave birth recently and moved to Spain after she and the 13-year-old Romanian father split. The mother of the girl doesn't understand why everyone's making such a big deal about it - she's just happy to have a new granddaughter.
I read this article in Metro News this morning and found it more than ridiculous, but afterwards found an article stating that the girl is not the youngest child mom.
Apparently "back in 1939, as TIME reported, Lina Medina of Peru, became pregnant at the age of 5 years, 8 months, and became a mother by age 6 years, 5 months." (TIME)

When I was 10 I didn't even totally understand the birds and bees. What a shock!

At 10 I hadn't even heard the term "the birds and the bees"

I wouldnt have been capable of motherhood. So she had to have started hers quite young to go through a pregnacy and delivery by 10 yrs old. Wow, how rough on a body and psyche that hasnt even grown yet....

I can't imagine how that child could actually be happy, but I guess when you don't know any better it doesn't really matter...

I think it really comes down to perspective. Based on the article linked in the original post, it would seem that this is not unusual for this cultural group. Of course, we "westerners" will have strong feelings about it, but I am happy that it would seem this girl has solid family support at this time.
On every other level though - yikes!!

Wow...there was a case of a 6 year old mother AS WELL?
That's a bit...
I'd like to know that background story o that one, I'm surprise her family members chose to LET her give birth...at that age, it would be extremely damaging to her body

grandma and my mother in law were married and had they're first children when they were only thirteen. My grandfather was twenty-one and my father in law was twenty. From the stories I've bin told by them it was normal for the guy's to take on such a young wife back then. It sounds pretty sick now, but things were very different back then. They both also had one child after another. My grandma had eight kids and my mother in law had seven. They probably would have had more if they could have. It sounds to me like the culture this young girl is from just hasn't grown like we have in Canada and the U.S. so they see nothing wrong with it. As for the five year old, I had no idea any one that young could even get pregnant let alone carry a baby to full term and it be born fine. Now that really scary!!!

@jchang. I totally thought that too!
I'm amazed. How did the 6 year old get pregnant?
