I wasn't sure where to post this... it is news and an issue. I just found out that at some point yesterday my debit card was copied and a large sum of money was stolen from my account!!! I used it a few times on the Shop Crawl yesterday evening, and a couple of times earlier that day. But the only new places I used it was in the stores on the shop crawl. I truly hope that none of those stores were involved, however, they are the only new places I had used my card.
The matter is being dealt with and I expect to have it cleared up next week. But it has been stressful, upsetting and I feel violated! I hope this did not happen to anyone else on the Crawl yesterday, but I felt it necessary to post this so that everyone can check their accounts. Also to remind everyone that you should always keep your debit and credit cards in sight! Tell the cashier NOT to hide your card when swiping it or try to swipe it yourself! Always hide your pin number when punching it in! But, unfortunately these precautions are not always enough. These guys are quick! And the technology they have is very sophisticated and often more advanced than the bank's own anti-theft measures!

Patricia, this is terrible. I'm so sorry to hear that this happened to you. I'm sure this has nothing to do with the stores that were involved as they are all reputable and would never risk their business to rip anyone off.
Do keep us posted on what happens and when it is sorted out with your bank.

I certainly did not mean to sound accusatory or make implications, and I apologize if I did. Perhaps I was still a little distraught when I posted the warning. The information could have been stolen days ago, those responsible just happened to take the money on the evening of the shop crawl. I didn't find out till the next day when my account was frozen.
I meant only to remind everyone that this kind of thing happens. I have nothing negative to say about any of the stores involved in the shop crawl! Everyone I encountered was very friendly and very happy to part of the event!
I will keep everyone posted on what happens.

Good to know! on Jun 02, 2008 @ 08:08 am
Thanks Patricia. I really hope your bank works this all out for you soon. This must be incredibly stressful for you. Let us know when it is all fixed :)
Update... on Jun 04, 2008 @ 09:37 pm
The stolen money will be replaced within 48 hours! I'm glad this is over. I probably will never find out if they catch those responsible. I wish I could relay a few choice words to them!!! Arg!
Be careful out there, ladies! There are some shady characters!

So glad this has been sorted out. It's pretty terrible that there are people out there who would do that. BTW, the new visa cards that have the chip in them are a really awesome way to prevent this kind of thing from happening as they need to have your card in hand in order to charge it.
Thanks for letting us know! I'm so glad you are getting your funds back!!
The same thing happened.. on Jun 17, 2008 @ 10:47 pm
The same thing happened with my debit card (not from Show Crawl, though). My account got temporarily suspended twice already due to suspicion of fraud. The first time, nothing was stolen..until the second 'stint' Apparently, I took out my daily allowance of $200 from Pointe Claire, Quebec...when in fact I have never been to that city!
I called my bank and they said they will rectify the situation within a week. Patricia, did you call them more than once? Maybe its my nerves, but I was not convinced of getting my money back on time. I should think about switching banks if this keeps happening.
Yeah... on Jun 18, 2008 @ 08:00 am
I did call them back. I waited a couple of days then got too impatient and nervous and called the bank. They didn't even ask me any questions about if I'd used the ABMs that the thieves had used or where I was! They just said, they were sorry for not getting back to me sooner, but they were really busy (meaning they are dealing with a lot of similar cases!!!?). My money was returned in 48 hours. But my account was frozen again because the thieves had deposited an empty envelope and when the bank found it they froze my account again! Also my Mum's account was frozen because my card is attached to one of her accounts! It's been a pain in a**!! But i'm glad it was all resolved!
I thought about changing banks. But this could happen with any bank card! The only thing you can do is be careful and reduce your daily limit so they can't take as much money!

This happened to me a couple of years ago. Just a word of caution for you ladies. If you're paying by debit, make sure the swiping of your card is in your line of sight. Apparently if they swipe multiple times they can get your private information... I'm guessing this would be your PIN.
This totally freaked me out so I very rarely pay by debit now. Credit cards are much safer, since any suspicious activity can be contested quite easily.
