interesting. I think I'd respond with "You know baby, I was thinking of getting you the season's pass to the Laker's games...but then got you this scarf instead. It's the thought that counts, right, snuckums?"

I can't even tell you how many times someone has pulled this on me. You get your hopes up and then once you realize that they aren't actually going to do anything, it's so disappointing.

"Babe, I'm going to give up ____ (insert addiction here)" for your b-day/Christmas/Valentine's Day gift!"
My hubby used that one for 3 years straight. Many years later, I'm still waiting on that promise to be fulfilled. I won't say which nasty habit he has, but it's a very common one.
This is not meant to be a rant on my hubby. I think you should never make such a promise EVER. Addictions are hard to break and you need to do it because you are ready and you want to quit. You'll find it hard to keep your motivation if you're doing it for someone else and then the game starts.
"You promised to ____"
"My wife is making me quit ___."
It is fuel for a fight, one I have had many times. Not. fun.
